You would only do things like that if you know a blizzard or something is coming where it would cause truckers to stop driving so that way you start moving ahead of time

I'd start at 3am and get through Chicago... take the longer break on 2nd stretch of the load... what happens if you have a tire issue or whatever and you've already wasted a bunch of time on the front end of the load? Call and reschedule? I rather deal with it and reduce chance of rescheduling. Customer doesn't want to hear any of that crap. Just do what you promised.

I just gotta wait to get to school then get out there and do it. For now I’ve just been researching and things are more confusing just reading about them.

I’ve heard things like how you can have 90 hours on duty and 70 driving. That’s what makes things even more confusing. You can’t drive more than 70 hours but both driving and on duty count towards 70 however you can go past 70 for on duty only

Hours of service only says when you can (or cannot) drive. You can be on duty as long as you want.

So you can’t drive past 14 hours of being on duty with only up to 11 hours of driving max but you can be on duty for 24 hours? Wouldn’t you be required to take 10 hours off duty? If you’re on duty 24 hours, how can you sleep? Why even have off duty time if you can be on duty as long as you want then

Say you work 14 hours driving then you work the dock for 10 more hours lifting boxes or whatever. You then must take a 10 hour break before you are eligible to drive a cmv again.

In theory you could lift boxes for say 70 hours straight. You'd then have used up your 70 hour clock and would then therefore need a 34 hour break before being eligible to drive any cmv.

I see now, 10 hours off duty is only to drive again. I guess there must be some sort of pay for just being on duty then but it would be worse than driving. Driving 70 hours at 46 cpm vs lifting boxes on duty 70 hours. You get paid hourly for being on duty only then or something?

Yes, starting at 0300 on Tuesday makes sense, but would you start at 0300 on Wednesday when you have less than 3 hours into the customer and can't deliver until noon? No, you would start at 0800, which means you could drive until 2200 - but will there be parking available then? Maybe, maybe not.

In theory maxing out your hours every shift will allow you to earn more. In practice I find that it ends up being close to the same at the end of the quarter.

How you are paid is irrelevant to the hours of service.
On duty means anything work related aside from driving. It doesn't matter if your company pays you detention say if you have a 4 hour unload. If you are legitimately in the sleeper waiting, you can log sleeper.

No of course I would not start early on Wednesday. Also, just because I start at 8 am say Wednesday, what bearing does that have on when I will shut down Wednesday night? Don't need to drive right to the limit. But if I slack off on day 1 and an issue arises now I am under the gun to resolve it immediately. I rather give a little extra time for the unforeseen. Cuz we all know that's when they happen. When you really don't have the extra time.

I also hate changing appointments. Unprofessional in my mind.
