You log it as you see fit. If I pull I to a shipper and they are two hours behind schedule, why in the world would I log that time as On Duty???? It makes no sense.

I get that part but what happens if you log in a way to cheat the system? For example if there is something you have to log as on duty but instead you log it as off duty so it doesn’t go into your 14 hours.

The 14 is a running clock, so even off duty you are burning it.

What you sre saving is the 70, and potentially restarting your 8.

So the only way to not burn the 14 hours is to take the 10 hour break which you can ONLY take after the 14 hours are burned. I finally get it now, my god lol. When you said even off duty you burn the 14 hours, I was thinking well when you’re off duty for those 10 hours, you still burn the 14?

Technically, yes. Until you hit 10 consecutive hours off, the 14 still counts down.

However, you do not need to complete a full 14 before starting your 10 hour dot break.

Say I start at 6, I do a 30 min pti, then drive for 4 hours, spend 30 minutes dropping etc. I now have:
    3 on the 8
    7 on the 11
    9 on the 14

If I spend an hour off duty I would have

    8 on the 8
    7 on the 11
    8 on the 14.

If I instead took 10 hours off I would have

    8 on the 8
    11 on the 11
    14 on the 14.

OP, it will make more sense once you're actually working the HOS.

Recap/reset also depends on your company.

My company likes to bring us home for a 34. If our freight is bangin' like it often does in summer, we end up running some recap. But not often, and usually just 2 or 3 days.

That’s exactly what I’ve started to figure. Right now I’m just exposing myself to the theory of it and trying to see how it all fits together in the practical sense

There’s gonna be so much to learn. I can hardly drive a stick right now and I gotta learn how to do a regen, air leak detection test, drop and hook, how weigh stations work

It seems like a lot, and it is, but it's all simple stuff. Pay attention to the details and the bug picture sorts itself out.

Depends on the company. Usually as long as you lock your trailer down and park it in a safe spot you can bobtail around the city on "off-duty" drive status. If you want to go downtown I would grab an uber to be safe because it can be hard to find a parking spot for even a bobtail in certain downtown spots.

Everyone has their own way of logging. Some run 100% by the book and will log everything to the minute. Some people don't log anything but drive time and some find ways to "cheat" the computer and run without logging anything. The problem is when you get inspected by the DOT man and he wants to look at your logs in detail. I will say this, i keep my "on-duty" time to a minimum and I have never had an inspector have an issue with my logging. They are looking for specific things including a pre-trip, loading/unloading times, and fuel stops. If they look at your logs and it shows nothing but drive time and sleeper birth, they will have a problem with that.
