    2017: $483 tax on AGI of 29,670
    2018: $2040 on 44,158

    That’s taxes paid on gross.

I used to be a state employee, so I know a bit about what you are going through having a hard time parting with that pension. What subjects do you teach?

Also, I stayed just long enough to lock in a small pension, then I got the hell out of there.

I'm no financial expert, but I invest and also looking at property next to diversity from just company stocks. If you making what as a teacher, 45-65k? If you are disciplined the extra money you'd make driving would probably be more than a pension at retirement time since you are still only my age. As a state worker, I'd have a lot harder time getting into the property market trying to piecemeal a decent down payment.

There's just the being away from home from wife and kids issue, I guess. That seems to be the biggest thing that keeps people out.

I currently teach 1st grade. The health benefits and pension really tie individuals down. My wife is also a teacher and because of that our health insurance is entirely free for our entire family. If I leave teaching we would need to pay for my daughter and I separately. I might be able to last a few more years but I don’t know if I have 20 in me. ‍♂️

If it's sucking the life out of you, just get out. Worry about the rest later. You might not have the difficulties I had, I developed bad habits over the years trying to hang in there and soured my taste for IT to the point I couldn't return. I know there are always days you don't want to work, but you gotta draw the line some where. I don't know your position, but just throwing that out from something I learned.

These numbers might vary depending on where you end up, but looking at my medical insurance form I got in the mail in December for this year, Employee + Family for the ASO CHOICE PLUS = 135.75 per week. I have averaged 1500 per week first 9 months in team driving. Since then it's been more average. I know with the state the health insurance is usually free, but with the extra pay you get, you might end up ahead. Was the case for me. Think on it.

@Chinatown also lives in Las Vegas like you do. He knows all the good companies to work for.

I don't have kids like you do, I wish I could tell you more. Meditate on it, or pray, or whatever it is you do. In my opinion salary jobs suck because you make the same amount no matter what, and it never brought out the best in me. Now that I am paid for the work I do, whether I work a lot or less or a lot more, I found the positive in both. With salary I felt underachieved when I worked less than what I got paid, and abused when I worked harder.

Maybe I am weird but being paid specifically for everything I do, every pick up and all miles driven, it makes more sense and found it motivating.

Look at line haul jobs in Las Vegas. Check their benefits package and also consider job satisfaction which leads to a healthier, longer life.

At any rate, there's a lot of freight that needs to be moved. If its best for you, I hope you join in.

Self driving technology wont be around for awhile. It's coming, but it's not around the corner. 10 years, maybe, but its not right around the corner. Work hard, save some money, and retire. Watch your kids grow old. Get good at a computer game and in a virtual completive environment--kill everyone! Take a long vacation with your wife.

I can't do anything in real life except kill scorpions, but you see my avatar? Yeah, I'm a cyber warrior!
