temp controlled loads have to be maintained. if some (or all) of product freezes, it can be denied at the receiver..

 

My reefer never shuts off when I have a temp controlled load on board... Most my loads are in the 35 to 50 degree range, depending on what it is.

 

Those leafy green produce loads can be damaged at even a few degrees below their typical 34° set point..

The on/off mode is more for do not freeze, or frozen loads, you can get away using it with some produce like potatos, onions, oranges, etc. The heartier ones. Or if you haul chocolate or other commodities where it's fine anywhere between say 40 and 65 degrees or whatever. Anything leafy green or any kind of berry must be kept on continuous.

 

It's either heating, for medicines on my rig or it's cooling at -20 for either dough, ice cream etc.

 

You never know what someone is hauling. Right now I'm moving a lot of paint. Sherwin Williams won't be as quick to load a dry van if the load goes north. I have to set the reefer at 55 degrees. If its 22 degrees, the reefer will come on fairly often

 

Same here. Better safe than sorry.

 

Same. All my loads were continuous. If it needed it or not.

Maybe a few is cycle. But personally it's on or don't bother with it at all.

 

Also makes it easier to sleep without that Freight Train starting up and shutting down all night long.
