So if the court finds you used deadly force in an illegal way you're just going to hang yourself right? It's not a cut and dry situation. And don't think for a minute that I sit on the no guns fence. I was a Gunner's Mate in the Navy for 13 years and I am qualified as expert in all the service small arms and have a stand up gun locker that's getting too small for all my guns.. If it were up to me I'd have a mini gun in a roof turret along with any weapon I could use going down the road. I posted this thread because I feel it's just not worth the trouble to carry a weapon in the truck. You're not just going to walk away from a scene if you use a gun. Plus you might even be charged if you don't know the rules of engagement down to a T.
I like Nevada where you can still walk around in most places with a side arm in view. But cross over into California and it's a different story. There's other ways to avoid a situation without using deadly force and a good company should train you on that.

One point was made, Carry a shotgun!! You can legally carry a shotgun, empty and in the vehicle whereas you cannot carry a concealed pistol. Whilst carrying certain Govt. loads they give you a shotgun. I myself would give it to whoever tried to hold me up. If you want to transport a pistol sometimes states require they be in a separate compartment, and some require it to be dismanteled. IL is one that allow concealed weapons unless you are a Law enforcement officer.

Someone asked about Pepper spray. It is illegal in some states, others ok it but require you to have a safety to keep from accidental firing. I heard during the mid 90s that DOT was confiscating it.

When should I use pepper spray?
Use pepper spray if you are threatened or your life is in danger. And use it ONLY in defense of people, not property. It is a crime to use self-defense sprays in an offensive manner.
New York: the sellers must be local licensed firearm dealers or local pharmacies.
Massachusetts: the buyer is required to obtain a Firearms Identification Card (FID); the sellers must be local licensed firearm dealers.
Michigan: OC Pepper Spray can be no stronger than a 2% concentrate. CS is the only Tear Gas accepted. Both must be no larger than 35 grams per can. No combination sprays allowed.
Wisconsin: Pepper spray only. No Tear Gas, UV Dye or combination sprays. OC Pepper Spray can be no stronger than a 10% concentrate. The can must be between 15-60 grams only. Must -
Those posted are the most stringent and it is now legal in all 50 states and legal to carry 1 only in your checked luggage, no carryons.

I carry a can of wasp and hornet spray. Legal in every state (I assume Canada too). Stuff will shoot a stream out about 15-20 feet. Just as good as mace/pepper spray if you hit the perp in the face.

FYI- You can not carry a gun in a commercial truck per USDOT regs. even with a carry permit.

As has been very often requested in this thread, would you PLEASE show us where you supposedly got this information? Another request, please go back, and read a few pages of this thread; you will find that while many have stated the same as you, NO ONE has given us the actual US DOT reg number. I will go so far as to confidently state you will also be incapable of doing so. The simple reason that there is NO SUCH REGULATION. While many states do have some sort of law/reg, you clearly mentioned the USDOT regs.
This thread has had plenty of opinions, how about some facts, and the origin of that fact, law, reg, or whatever.
Drive-by posters just doing their thing..... ignorance must truly be bliss.
