Running Coast to Coast the radios that I heard 30 miles away were usually stock radios at ?% modulation.
Once they got those radios modified at a radio shop somewhere the distance I was able to hear them was always drastically reduced by 2/3

I'm happy with my General hp40 from Bell's and would order another radio from him without a second thought. Swapped out the stock Ranger with an Astatic 636 and it came alive. I run my mic gain at 3/4.
Method240, Timin770 and bored silly Thank this. -
There are several good techs in the US. Some are better doing certain things than others. If the consumer knows more what to ask for I believe we would get better tuned radios. Please don’t forget that the antenna system is very important as well.

Wow , I read this whole thread and as an old school driver I'll say cb radio shops are almost a thing of the past. In my present state (FL) there are about 3 or 4 left I know of, mesa , hi tech , and former 10-4 shop > one local guy LOL that tries to work on radios at his house nowadays.
Bell's is the best shop around these here parts as compared to the above clown rip off shops.
I recently bought a new President Ronald (4 wheeler) at Bell's that was converted only and have no complaints and everyone likes it (loud and strong) when on the air.
Now a new 10/11/12 meter radio doing 12/52 watts pep with all kinds of extras on it for $140.00 just can't be beat. Only had to rewire my Turner/ Telex RK 56 to 6 pin (myself) and go to go.
Bells did a fine job by me and thats all I got to say.Timin770 Thanks this. -
