When is the abuse going to stop? Distribution centers have been abusing drivers for a while now, but it seems it’s getting worse. Drivers are out here trying to make a living and it’s hard to do when you sit at a shipper for 11 hours like I did recently, and then on same load I sat at the receiver for 7 more hours. This load took 12 hrs from shipper to receiver, but 18 hrs to load/unload. What I find perplexing is I’m given an appointment time to pickup or deliver, but if I’m late I could receive a penalty/deduction in pay.

Go to LTL road driving. Meet and turn or laydown at a motel.

The abuse stops when you choose to stop going back to the abusers for more abuse.

It's simple. Stop donating your time. If you are a company driver quit and get a job that pays for your time. If you are an owner, make sure the contract includes a detention rate that is equal to the rate getting if you were driving.

Anything less is the driver/owner giving away their time and they have no one to blame but themselves.

You can dispose of the abuse completely by running Pharmacy, Tanker, Flatbed. anything other than live loading and unloading. Appointments are meaningless, but are serious economic threats to life and family etc if you are fired for being late and so on.

Drivers are disposable. Shippers and Recievers have been abusing them longer than I have been alive. If I tied a dollar to taking care of these rattlesnakes I have no money to show for it.

These abuses will go on long after I am gone.

I don’t have any experiences. In my 22 years I’ve never chosen to be in the van or reefer market, except for one month pulling a reefer to help a friend out. I’ve only done flatbed, livestock, and currently dry bulk. I feel I’ve been fairly compensated for my time about 90% of the time. The other 10% are things out of everyone’s control.

I’m with LongFLD. You can tell when you go to one if getting screwed is the exception or the rule. For instance I’ll never do a Meijer run again in my life.
No need to elaborate, once taught me all I’ll ever need to know.

    Don't haul van freight.

Flatbeds and Tankers don't sit around all day. Unless you're in California.

Are you not getting paid for the delay? If not, I’d say that’s on you as the owner of your company.
