A little background: I drove for a small grain co-op that has 13 trucks, they used to require 2 years experience but now they'll hire anybody(and I mean ANYBODY)so last summer they hired this kid who worked at a fast food joint his entire adult life and trained him to get his CDL.(with no contracts or obligations of any kind)The plan was for him to get my old truck which was a 2007 Sterling with a 10 speed transmission but after tearing the clutch out of 2 trucks it was clear he just couldn't drive a manual so instead of doing the right thing and firing this guy the company had him test out in his trainers truck which is an automatic,so after a few weeks of training he gets his CDL with the automatic restriction but there's no automatic trucks open so they take me out of the 2017 Volvo that I worked for a year to get into and put me back in the old Sterling which is completely trashed at this point just so this burger flipper turned steering wheel holder can keep his job.
I know there's a few other companies that do this too but I just can't see any benefit out of this practice when the only thing these poorly trained new drivers do is get in accidents and tear up equipment. Needless to say this experience left me so angry I ended up taking a non-driving job with one of our customers.
Why do companies cater so much to new drivers?

They’re like young girls. Easy to impress and moldable. They get them drunk on potential pay and a big truck, then get them to swoon with visions of the open highway. Next thing you know they’re pregnant with a mentally challenged DM as a child and the realization they’re broke. The smart ones keep their head down and move on to a company for adults or get their own truck.

Because those not familiar with the INDUSTRY Scams are easy targets for these low life companies...

I am sorry but if a company did that to me I would be looking for another job. I understand good drivers are hard to come by and you have to do some stuff for them(hell we were all new at some point) but I don’t agree with babying them and handing them everything. They don’t learn that way.

As was mentioned above, new drivers are easy targets. Companies can usually get at least a year of cheap labor out of a new driver before the driver figures out they're being shafted and quits.
I fell for it once, and I can now see why companies cater to them. Even with 100% turnover each year, companies save millions in salary hiring new recruits for much less than seasoned drivers. They work the Hell out of them with lousy loads the seasoned drivers don't want, then throw them away like a piece of garbage. I read it on here every day.RubyEagle, WildTiger1990, bottomdumpin and 4 others Thank this. -
Here’s the thing.... why do you care so much? Why do you feel so angry about this “burger flipper”? The way you worded it, drips with resentment.
You should just focus on yourself. Don’t be angry or jealous with others, it doesn’t affect you. When they decided to give the sterling truck to you that you weren’t happy about, then chat with your boss. If you don’t leave satisfied, then quit. There’s no reason for others to have control of your emotions or happiness.
As for hiring bad drivers and trying to keep them, I heard years ago in like 2008 that large companies like Werner were given massive government funds if they hired enough new employees to help the unemployment crisis. Don’t know the specifics or if it’s true or to what extent, but it might be a reason. That, or maybe this kid is a relative.x1Heavy Thanks this. -

companies I've driven for give the crappy truck to the new guy.
If it still has fenders after awhile ,they may move up.tinytim, QuietStorm, kemosabi49 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Yep, #### trucks go to newbies. Ive been there, and totaled a few myself. That's why they are #### trucks. No tears from the Owner to see them sent to salvage. (One in particular with a burned out engine...that was a day to remember. What a totally screwed up fiasco.)
