In September I went out on my own and bought a truck. 2011 Freightliner Columbia day cab with the 14L series 60 and a ten speed, 500k miles. Before purchasing the truck, from Ryder:confused:, I had them address what I thought were all the issues with the truck at the time. Leaking oil cooler replaced, new starter, shocks, 4 new batteries, and a few other little issues. I asked them to pull an oil sample and also please address the lopey idle.

Well it took almost two months for them to finish the other repairs and by the time they were done with those I was already frustrated and way behind the date I told the company I was leasing on to I could start so I let the oil sample slide and they assured me that the idle was probably set to low causing the erratic idle. I knew I should have looked at an oil sample and that the idle was set correctly but I purchased a 1 year warranty and took delivery of the truck and off to work I went. Beside the idle the truck pulls great and tracks straight as an arrow with good virgin rubber and brakes and gets good fuel mpg.

Fast forward to today and my truck has been down for three months at freightliner waiting on parts.

This is the second time it's been in the shop since September. The first time I brought it in to a local freightliner dealership for the lopey idle and they diagnosed it as injector o'rings and injector cups. Fixed that and they ran the overhead. It ran good until I put it under its first load and right back to the same hiccups under idle.

Still frustrated that it wasn't running right and worried that the idle was a sign of something worse I was recommended to take the truck to the dealership it's at now. I explained the symptoms, again, which I told them only happened after the truck was up to temp and pulling a load, that they would likely not be able to recreate it bobtailing with no load, which they couldn't which is why I told them to please have a tech available as soon as I got there to come out and look at the truck when I arrived so they could see what I was talking about. What did they do when I got to the desk and asked for a tech? Well we can't really get someone to come out right now. What did they say when they road tested it cold and tried to duplicate the problem? Tech said it ran great.

So that's the backstory to the NIGHTMARE I'm in now. Fast forward to them doing the PM while trying to figuring out how to fix the idle. They pulled the oil drain plug and find gear teeth on the plug. Pull front cover and find a couple chipped teeth on a bull gear and cam gear.

This was the beginning of January. Since then I've been waiting on a Bull gear from Detroit. I've been told every two weeks that on a certain date the part should be in. The part was supposed to be in again today, NO DICE.

Fed up, I called Detroit and spoke to a clueless, unsympathetic woman who told me that they were on a national back order and that they had only shipped 17 since August and there were 400 of them on back order to date. I told her that that was unacceptable and asked to speak to whoever was in charge of purchasing so I could find out who the vendor was that produced the part, which lead to voicemail after voicemail.

So I'm now on another two week hold on a hail mary that this part is even being produced anymore by Detroit and that by some miracle the dealership that my trucks at will be allocated the part I need just to put my truck back together to par standards in order to try and fix the initial issue I brought it in for all while trying to salvage my new job that I've only been at for less than six months. Not making a good first impression.

My question to those that have been at this for a while. Is there something I'm not doing or should be doing to try and expedite the process of getting this part for my truck? I can't put in an aftermarket bull gear or a used one if I want to keep the warranty I purchased and have the repair be warrantied. What would you do?

Also in regards to the erratic idle. It only happens once the truck warms up and pulling a load. I pull NYC and when I get down into the city off 95 and start hitting lights it will act like its a cammed v8 at a stop. It will just lope at the light and then when I pull away it will smooth out and run fine. I also noticed that when you hit the governor at the pedal or on cruise it's not a smooth transition but more of an abrupt power change that gets a little choppy between speeds above and below the set governor. Any correlation to the idle chop and governor chop? Fuel related? Intake throttle sensor? Fuel pump?Clutch springs? Oem side of fuel system shows no air in fuel system.

Any help is appreciated and yes I know I probably shouldn't have purchased the truck from ryder and I've made other mistakes as well but I had a very short window to get into the company I'm with and had to get out of a bad situation at my job as a company driver. I'm really hoping there is someway to salvage this truck as I refuse to fail at being an owner/operator. I told myself to be ready for and expected a challenge going independent but I didn't expect it to be this challenging all at once. Thanks for your time!!

How many miles are on this?
Bull gear failure on a 14.0 liter is rare as they ride on a bushing.
The 12.7 had bull gear failures are far more common because it rides on tapered bearings and they fail at higher mileage.
The rarity of the 14 liter bull gear failure could be why the part is so hard to come by.

First off i would seek legal counsel.

However, if it was me, I'd try to get the truck back and drive it ...if drivable... until the parts arrive. If it grenades the motor, they'll have to replace it anyway. There may be limitations in whatever this "warranty" is though.

I feel your pain though. I went through issues with a D16 Volvo that took over a month just to get a stupid egr cooler they were backordered nationally on. It'll drive you crazy and costs a ton of money in downtime if you can't use the truck.

Another idea.. how about using a rental in the meantime??.... At least make some money while you wait to get it back if you can't drive it.

500 k on the motor. I had them cut open the oil filters and they said they looked good, like nothing made it up top and no bearing material.

The warranty is for all internally lubricated parts and turbo/ injectors. The front of the motor is torn down and they've already had Detroit come out and press on the new crank gear. If they put it back together I think I'll have to pay the parts and labor because the job wasn't finished.
I am using a rental through my company which is a blessing because without it I'd be sunk by now. I'm just not sure how much longer they are willing to put up with this.
