I'm about to sign a contract hauling rock 150 miles and then coal back. So i will be loaded both ways. I'm trying to decide what engine will give me the best MPG. The 3 engines I will pick from will be a 3406e, n14, 12.7 detroit. Truck has to be older than 2000 to stay away from elogs so I can get two trips in a day. It is pretty much all Interstate. I'm pretty sure the detroit is the best for mileage but everybody I know that has a Detroit doesnt gross that much.

Just to give you an idea. ( might be useless information lol )

    I have a performance ISX15 550hp/2050tq Cummins and I run 120,000lbs and average 2.9 - 3.8 MPG depending on hills.

One of my trucks used to run that kind of weight/ 12.7/18/3.90. Think he said he was under 4mpg average.

That kind of weights usually create a fuel burn of gallons per hour rather than how far you can go on mileage per gallon. It would take all the older two strokes could give and then some in those days.

Goes without saying the more horse you have on hand the less work you have to do. So for that kind of weight I'll be looking to see if there are 750 HP or better engines in the USA.

Ya I'm already planning on turning up the engine. My truck now has an 3406c in it and I average 4.5 mpg pulling a Hay train crossing around 110k but that is only loaded one way.

We haul 140,000 lbs, 65-70% loaded.
Some guys get just under 4 mpg, a few break 5 mpg in the summer.
Trucks at 500 hp or less seem to average better overall. Yes they are slower, but horsepower costs fuel.

If your going for pre eld I would make sure the drive line is up to the task before I even worried about mpg at near 120k.

You have a pre-eld C already. You know the truck and its quirks, why start all over again.

Problem with the truck I have now is that it is geared so low its top speed is 65. So its tuff to get the 2 trips in a day without being able to go faster at times. Also I will still need it to pull my hay train. This truck will stay hooked to the double belly dump trailers and also the new truck will have another driver along with myself.

Ok I got you. What's the specs? Trans, rears, tire size?

If you have the cash a 5ds '98 or 1mm '99 is what I'd be looking for. Good luck though

Since you’re going pre-eld, I would completely go through the running gear before it hauls a load. You don’t want to be packing weight with tired transmission and rears.

A 12.7 at those weights could make for a long day.
