This may be a stupid question, but why is it that the mega carriers have double to three times as many trailers as tractors?

Dropped trailers spotted at customer locations. Hard to do drop and hooks with a 1 to 1 ratio.

So that they can do drop/hooks. 1 trailer per truck doesnt allow you to do that.

Easy answer. You can drop and hook at shippers and receivers if you have a massive trailer pool. It also establishes you with a shipper. For example, my carrier can tender more loads with certain customers because of the amount of trailers we have empty and available at that customer's location (s).

while those answers are good, the truth seems to be that they have to have X number of trailers to claim X capacity for the customer when they give the sale pitch. Customer's needs with capacity is fluid for them, they can move trailers around to fit the needs of one or many customers. The same reason why people are moving empty trailers around and just dropping them, they may sit for a few days or weeks but they are there "just in case".

How do the carrier's keep track of which of their trailers are where? I was under the impression when you drop a trailer for a drop n hook, someone else will be using your trailer.

Just speaking for my employer, when we drop a trailer at a customer (shipper or receiver), no other carrier is suppose to take that trailer. It belongs to my company, not Swift, JB Hunt, etc.

Also, when we drop the loaded trailer at a receiver, if they keep for a certain amount of time (not sure what that time frame is), my boss charges a storage fee. It encourages them to unload it in a timely manner.

From personal experience, if one of our drivers spots another carrier's tractor pulling our trailer, we let dispatch know (hopefully we got the company name off of the truck and maybe the truck number). My company will then take the necessary action. The circumstance I am familiar with, the other carrier was charged a fee for using our trailer to pull their load.

When smart trailers that utilize telematics become more mainstream, do you think your company or others will still drop those smart trailers for drop n hook? Or is the risk too high for each trailer

they like have as many trailers as possible, so they can print their safety message on the back of every trailer while failing to keep up with the maintenance on all these trailers because they have too many trailers and not enough good paid mechanics because they are too busy making money loading all these trailers and sending them down the road while at the same time spewing rubbish to the public that the guy with one trailer is an unsafe outlaw.

Most big carriers, and many small ones too, have had gps trackers on their trailers for years. Also when dispatch is notified, either directly or over QC or Peoplenet, their computers update the location in their system. Not to say trailers never get "lost" but for the most part they can tell where any trailer is at any time.
