I’m at Penske just scoping things out. They have a Cascadia Freightliner available. 2013 200k miles $51,000??! Truck was used to haul broadcasting equipment for Roger Penske. Rep claims it’s the best that can be bought on the east coast. Sounds really sketch to me.

I was going to explain in detail of what I see as major mistakes with your assumptions, but honestly imam getting tired of doing that.
I buy distressed fleets from owners and banks because of owners mismanagement and "bad luck". I see a lot more reasons of failure than most here will ever on what causes these failures and why. This is my business, the trucking part and the money that is made off of it keeps me doing what I enjoy. I know what I am doing from years of working with other industries (primarily health care) doing pretty much the same thing either with IT or finances and this is not easy work.
I came to the conclusion a while back that people do not want to learn a thing about how to do this right, they all see money and act like their past business experience counts. They have their mind made up before even ask the first question which is what you've done. This happens a lot with owners who I interview when I buy a fleet, they still don't get it, they crapped all over the drivers, ran a cheap operation to keep it afloat or they purchased without thinking and think it is just someone who did this to them, they want me to say "yep you are right" but get pissed off when I tell them their mistakes and the same goes here.peterbilt_2005 and Humblepie Thank this. -
Penske, Ryder, and other companies leased out and rented out trucks, many of them from 10 years ago could have been 60 series Detroits, or ISX Cummins, the first DD 15s were also not equipped with the required emissions equipment to go to California today. (not CARB compliant).
Also, the newer Cascadias are better, reliability wide, than the first ones that used DEF, 2011 and 2012, I would avoid with either DD15, DD13, or the ISX.
2014s were better, especially the DD engines, and newer is supposed to be better yet.
My company runs national lease trucks, best thing there is if it breaks down, you get another truck from the nearest affiliate to run while repairs are made, but that logistics thing crops up because you have to get the truck back when it's repaired and return the 'loaner' to where you got it. Regularly in an area, not much trouble, but hardly ever there, big problem.
ELD is another complication, nothing is as portable as a looseleaf logbook and a pen. -
75% of that is 4500 to 5200 to the truck. 1500 a week in fuel + 1500 in driver salary =$3000. 350 in truck payments 250 in maintenance 250 in tags, ifta, 2290 and other little taxes. =$850. 10%gross for income tax= 450. Adds up to $4250. $4550-$4250=$200. Not even 5%. And that’s assuming they have not fluffed the numbers and

So my question is how are some making it and others not?

Why would one have monthly maintenance? I understand routine but is that really monthly. I guess the best thing to do is find someone that is actually successful at this.
