I heard an absolutely terrible rumor from an owner operator who is leased on with my carrier. He tells me that any mechanical repair that is subject to a DOT inspection will have to be performed by a certified mechanic. To be clear, he said it was a rumor he had heard. Any truth here?

I haven't heard anything about it. But that would totally screw over a whole lot of people.
rabbiporkchop, PE_T and spindrift Thank this. -
It's just another truck driver story. For now, anyway.
roshea, Rideandrepair, Midwest Trucker and 3 others Thank this. -
Hey, if you have more than 2 years experience working on stuff, even if it’s your company, your LLC, your qualified to take ASE certification tests.
I’ve been looking into and talking to ASE about getting air brake certified so I can legally back my slacks of 1/2 a turn... smh lolPE_T, peterbilt_2005, Rideandrepair and 2 others Thank this. -
Rideandrepair Thanks this.

(Putting your company name as the employer)Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
You can get brake certification from the internet. Take the free course, then take the test, if you pass a certification will be mailed to you. It also includes a free screwdriver. Don't ask me how I know, and by the way its from a major brake company so its legit.
Rideandrepair, Snailexpress and HopeOverMope Thank this. -
Rideandrepair Thanks this.

Why wouldn't they if the major brake company that makes most of the brake parts you will work on is the one issuing you the certification?
Rideandrepair and HopeOverMope Thank this. -
So, if you are able to perform many of your own small repairs...you just write off the parts but never mark it in your equipment repair and maintenance file... like it never happened.. don't even write it on your daily inspection report just make sure you take care of it before too long and get inspected...
How would that be any different from say having a brake can or an air bag changed out by the teenagers posing as technicians at a ta ?
I have changed out a head light bulb a few times and never marked it down
Edit
And even adjusted my own brakes a time or three....86scotty, BoyWander, Rideandrepair and 3 others Thank this.
