Hey guys. I know this a mechanical question. But felt it was better to ask you experienced guys

So basically I own my own truck and trailer. First truck stolen( see my other thread) , bought a new one. Now i have been having this kind of clunking back and forth like there was too much play from my locking jaw and king pin.

I have a Holland fw17 5th wheel. While I was at the shop, I ask and them to quiclyk help me tighten up the lock jaw. The adjusting pin was basically locked tight(rust or what ever). So we removed the pin, lubricated it, installed it back and then adjusted it one notch.(I think there is only 3 holes)

Drove off, everything felt fine. Fast forward to when I’m loaded. I get this excessive kind of bounce or pulling of the trailer when hitting dips and holes in the road. I use to only feel this on my old truck when I had a real heavy load.45/46k
I picked a load 28,000 and I was still feeling this excessive bounce. I haven’t tried to turn the the adjusting pin back yet. But just wanted to hear if any of you might know what’s going on

Again only feel excessive bouncing or pulling of my truck when I’m loaded. Total fine if I’m bibtailong or pulling empty trailer.

Take a look at your suspension.

The 5th wheel's ability to prevent a trailer from slamming back and forth in it's kingpin is separate from overall bouncing.

You could also be nose heavy in that trailer which will beat on your drives more but should not be a problem to the tractor as long you are under 34000 on your drives.

Time for shocks or the suspension isn't pumping up for the load.

My truck gets real bouncy if either truck or trailer are deflated.

Check for worn shocks and proper airbag height.

Are you pulling the same trailer?
If so get the king pin checked. It could be worn or damaged.

Any Shop worth it's salt will have a tool that is a "go/no go" measuring device to check whether the hole in the fifth wheel has wallowed out and become too large. It happens over time, especially if it's hooked and unhooked often. It's not an expensive procedure to get it checked. If it's wallowed out the only fix is to replace it with a new or used one, which is pricey but it's a safety issue that can't be ignored for long because as the hole gets bigger ( wallows ) it accelerates the growth of the problem. Get it checked soon, then you can plan accordingly.

If he had a wallowed out hole. He'd have some kinpin slop like what mine does. I get a thump when I take off from kingpin movement. Using that lucas 5th wheel slide grease eliminates that. Pretty much every local job I've pulled a 5th wheel trailer has been that way.

A lot of times that thump you feel taking off and stopping is slack in the drive line. Be it from the hole in yoke that u joint cup goes in being egged to the splines on jack shaft wore out or even slack in one differential. That's why it's best to use a new blank pin with a handle welded on it to set the jaws in 5th wheel and check for slack. Then you know what you have. A binding 5th wheel can cause all kind of crazy problems be it dry or the jaws too tight.

Unhooked the trailer today checked airbags and struts. Also checked the king pin on my trailer. No issues from what I can see. I’m at home so don’t have 5th wheel adjustment tool available. But I set it back to original position. Going to see if that’s makes any diffence

Too ironic the bouncing happens as soon as I tighten up the jaws. If the bouncing stops, I’m going to get the 5th wheel properly checked and adjusted. In the mean too I have been trying to source out a holland fw35 5th wheel top plate. Pretty hard to find. Not available online like that. One place loacally told me about 1100. Thought those plates only go for about $800.

Find one site online. Not sure how legit it is. Called the number and getting some weird noise with a auto hang up
