Well, he has been driving for 6 years and he did his homework and he decided to this as an 100% independent o/o . All I did is helped him out on his paper work .
If he is disciplined, most likely he will do ok .

Yeah, I'm aware of it. But unless a guy has some sort of specialty freight that pays well, it just doesn't pay to jump into this field right now.

I got a quote for about 25% that much from OOIDA.

But not everyone will accept them I've found out.

Got a quote from Progressive a few years back for like $12K.

$30K - What in the world are you hauling?

One thing you can do to get freight with your own authority aside from load boards is go to companies that have 40 to 80 trucks and haul their loads when someone falls off one, and they need it covered.

This happens more than you think. That company is under contract, and has to get that load delivered.

So you're there to be their knight in shining armor. You're there to help. For a really good price too.

In my opinion, you stated some points here that I believe you are absolutely right.
However, if you know your priorities then things will appear much easier and remember everything has a price tag on it.
For instance , to me , family/ freedom is my number 1 priority, so far being an o/o 100% independent, is working great for me. Probably I could make more money doing something else, but my freedom and working enough to pay my bills and with discipline I’m doing better than what I had planned and I wouldn’t change for anything.. ..... retirement?? Well I rather travel and enjoy life now that I’m fairly young, than when I’m over 70 years old. Most likely I will not be able to walk the Great Wall of China or the Vatican or Greece, you know what I mean .
    Priorities bro .

That’s really not that bad. You could run 8000 miles per month and your costs be around 1.80/mi while paying yourself .60/mi and having .20/mi for maintenance and misc. That leaves you in a very feasible position for the truck to realistically make .50/mi or more.

110k/yr for you and your business combined on a 1 truck operation I’d think most would call very successful in a down market.

    Hang in there.

Thay assumes he can consistently get 2.30 a mile. No easy feat.

He would also save about $1500 running 8000 mi a month just on fuel. So there is a savings of .18/mi. So now we’re are down to 2.12/mi avg needed.

And 2.30 should be fairly easy running that few of miles. Ok maybe not easy but very doable. The hard part is trying to drive and book. 2.12/mi on 2000/mi is easy as pie.

It is a good business if you can pay for everything up front and have less overhead.
