And did these narrow rings make the engines 1% more efficient?
Did anybody even notice the difference in fuel consumption after the old pistons with the 1.5 mm rings were replaced with new pistons with the new 2.5 mm rings?

Yes, the problem was high oil consumption, not because of the narrower rings in itself, but because they got stuck in the grooves and eventually broke.

As I said, completely irrelevant to the discussion of oil consumption in the DAF or any other truck engine.

So, that is 1 litre on 6400 km, not too bad.

My only experience with them was in the late 80s. A good friend of mine had one crack on the steer axle of his Volvo, which was promptly replaced free of charge. Since then I have not heard any issues at all.

I agree with everything, except no need to check the oil. That is done before we start any of our trucks or equipment each day. We have alarms if oil level is low, but checking the oil will also provide information like condensation on the dipstick or cloudy oil which cool indicate a coolant leak. It also gives us a chance to look at other things in the process.

You only run 12000 miles in two years? 20,000 km is a very short interval; about right for severe service with mineral oil.

I hadn't considered much of this. It does support changing the oil at more frequent intervals in my mind though.

There are a lot of ways to be efficient in trucking, and with extended service intervals it is very easy to calculate the savings. A bit harder though when extended engine life and less downtime is considered, because it is hard to quantify, and affected by so many other factors.

My reason for running a 90 000km interval is not something i decided without taught.
It is based on what the manufacturer specifies.
If they, with all the testing they do, don't know..........
In fact,as a result off what was posted right here on TTR,i double checked with Daf.
    They confirmed the 90 000km.
As long as the oilsamples remain good .......i will follow their guidelines.

Ps i really like the electronic dippstick.
    You can check anytime .
