A friend of mine is pulling reefer for brokers. He is grossing 4000 out to New Jersey from Fresno, CA and 1400-1600 back. So a total of $5600 round trip. Is this what it pays? Sounds terrible to me. Isn't there something better for someone that owns their own tractor and trailer?

That bad huh? It just seemed pretty lousy having to come back to California for $1400-1600. Are there any tricks to up that rate?

for $1400 to $1600 i'd leave it on the dock and go empty.Nobody's putting freight on my truck for $0.50cpm. I'l go empty and save the wear and tear on the truck. he's shooting himself in the foot hauling it because once he hauls it they got him and they will always want him to haul it for that. Not t mention he's ruinging rates for everyone else, good way to get your tires slashed as that was probably someones regular load for three times the amount.

CA rates suck right now. And rates coming off the east coast always suck. he'd be better of coming to OH or somewhere empty n loading to CA or somewhere along the line for more then that rate and either going empty to CA or trying to find another load to get the rest of the way to CA.

the outbound is about 2800 to 3000 miles depending on where in CA. that's an okay rate for goig out there but not good by any means either. the rates per mile usually are less on those long runs. par for the course these days

Last week's USDA report was showing a slight shortage of trucks in Cali to all points east. Maybe those rates will start going UP over the next few weeks. I've seen the outbound rates as high as $10,000-$11,000 at the peak of the season:

there is a few weeks in produce season when the west coast rates are so high your better off deadheading back to the coast for the fast turn around and reload. at least it was back when we had our trucks and authority
