I do the same. Been local with Fedex and Estes for years then switched to OTR. To me, it’s easy to get off the interstate and site see. I talk nice to customers and drop the trailer then PC to the ocean like a car would. I was just lying on the beach in St Augustine Fl. Then Dallas for a Bikram yoga class to keep me in shape. Sure it’s lonely but I make the best of it. Sit and be miserable or do something about it. Heading home to grab my mtn bike and fishing pole soon. Not home really, my storage unit is my true home. Only way to save big money out here. No kids, never married and now no gf... makes things easier. Tough on you with kids, house/apartment and such. Tough on you alone too. Anyone enjoy the same things let me know. I’m always on the road. I luv Utah, one of my favorite states!
trucker tourist, what about site seeing while on the road?

ONCE in a while when a shipper requires days of wasted waiting, we go local. IF they come out ready they will just have to sit and wait a minute like we have been doing for them for free. We will be there shortly. (If we were really valued, they would have loaded us pronto)
But I have managed to get into several different locations in every state all over the USA and parts of Canada. Sometimes rent a car and run around, leave that truck in the truckstop or wherever. That's why I enjoyed running the 48 states so much it's a great deal of fun with endless activities to get into.
One time we scooted into St Michael's on the bay, there is a seafood restaurant among other things and we blasted two hours over a meal with the truck not too far away. Another time we were in Washington DC often via subway truck would be 50+ miles away.
Wheres the drivers?
Dunno. -
Put a nice note on the tractor saying “be back in 3/4 hrs” or some other nice polite excuse.
I literally parked the truck (bobtailing) into a public parking area in St Augustine, Daytona and Jax beach. Never had a problem with the company or authorities. Talk polite, be polite and look nice and you shouldn’t either. The company doesn’t say anything because I get things done. Always on time, never a scratch or a ding and I don’t complain. Still grabbing 3000 miles average a week. I even got driver of the month several times and this is with a mega. I also have 15 yrs experience so I can swing doors well. lol -
Usually the truckstop boss inside the fuel desk has the keys or a copy of them and everything is settled. Off we go. It's our time.
Occasionally for example FFE Phoenix west says we aint loading nothing until 2 am, you are free to do whatever you want with bobtail. We want you back by midnight ready to work.
Whoo hoo. We went to Mesa and other local areas to visit. That was a good day they gave us.the white knight Thanks this. -

Hot Springs is a place where historically you could get a public bath in so called healthy springs. That was what the place did for two centuries more or less. However.
Crime and vice is a problem there in this state.
I know nothing about that sort of relaxation or health boosting activites.
Arkansas for us was home, however it's not what we are used to for activities. There is the Buffalo River up in the NW that is pretty good. We are fixing to open that right up for the late spring and summer. Outside of fayetteville you have a railroad line that does a little ozark scenery for people. In searcy you can train with the local police at their range for free once a month. Its absolutely open to everyone. As long you don't have a warrant etc, they check for all that. Children welcome.
There is fishing along the Arkansas among other things. a great deal of NWA land here. Hunting etc in particular.
A little bit of history as well. We were a occupied state after the US Civil War with troops based in the NLR VA Facility (Fort Roots) Historical buildings like the 1890's mule barn are still on property along with the original 1870's parade grounds and infantry barracks. History.
California we did not do too much Because of the nature of our schedules. We ended up in Vegas, Reno, Oregon, Death Valley, Sierras and so on before we can get into something for half a day.
Winchester NSSA once a year has live fire artillery competion shoot. It takes about most of a day. Red flag mountain range of about 400 yards in a deep valley. Civil War Artillery crews 24 sets. Real ammunition. You can stash a truck pretty much anywhere.
I can go on but if you are careful and preplan where you can legally park a tractor trailer for a time to be off duty there is no reason why you cannot enjoy the local area for what it is they offer.
Vermont in particular. The little general stores with the maple syrup in season. Like 10 dollars a bottle. Sure you can get Mississippi syrup at walmart here for 8 but it's not the same. You can even find a hollow with a mountain blocking the SW sky and park on a wide gravel shoulder right there along a state route for the night. The mountain blocks the satellite completely and gives you a absolute restful night without beepy fixit BS from safety or whatever.
I can go on but again this USA is a blessing for us all. You do not want to be trapped in some Beirut ####hole with no money and no morale and high crime unable to do anything joyful with your day off. Go somewhere else. -
