I have a friend in the NYS DOT Motor Carrier unit and years ago when guys first started doing that with the clearance lights they were giving them grief saying that it obscured the identification of a large vehicle. So I assumed they were illegal. I texted my buddy last night to find out more and apparently as long as they are amber they are fine.

So I retract that statement about them being illegal.

Sincerely apologize to the OP for derailing the topic as well.

As far as train horns go I think the best bet is to get a real train horn off a train maybe at a specialty wrecking yard or something. Might have to fabricate something here or there to get it functioning on the truck but, will most likely outlast any train horn you could buy at a truck accessories place.

On my last truck I installed Klienn train horns called The Beast. I had them plumbed up to 174 dbs. I chose those because to me they had a deeper nice sound. I mounted them under the cab on the frame. Yeah they are plastic, but plastic doesn't rust. I didn't bother with one of those hand valves on the floor, I installed a pressure button switch on the dash instead. Given that now most of our jakes are muffled, I enjoyed giving a moronic 4 wheeler a good toot right behind them. They figure out what their right foot is for.

  4. With people today having their nose buried deep in a cell phone, during driving.

I feel air horns are the only way to get the person's nose out of the phone while driving.

Excellent point, I do love my factory grover air horns for that, they are deep like a oil tanker ship.
Just the other day a man was thumbing through his phone next to me at 60 mph. I gave a quick burst of the grovers and he tossed the phone on the passenger seat like the thing gave him a shock. Gave me a good laugh.
