Wait a second... California will GIVE you $60,000 just so you won’t run your old truck? Is this for real!??!? If so no wonder they are dead broke!
That’s a no brainer to me. Buy a new truck. Get a KW 680 with Cummins X15. You won’t be in the shop at all.
Hell im about to go buy old trucks so I can get the 60k when buying new trucks. Is there a website that explains this subsidy?

$60 k? On top of what you get for Truck? Take the buyout before it expires. Blow by on a 12.7 is normal. Power loss probably just needs an overhead. Chances are it will run at least 2 yrs 250 k IMO. Of course you never really know. Ive had 2 now that blew @ 825k. Dropped liners. It will probably start losing ( burning or pushing ) coolant before it flat out blows. 1 gal 12 k that’s nothing, a lot of good engines, even the old ones use that much oil @ 500 k. Run it, till your ready to best maximize the tax credit, or pay for an OH. Mine has 1.2 mil on O.H., blow by is bad has been for years. Still runs strong and steady, so far, Lol, Relax and run it!!!. Put a little extra for a tow Truck (worst case scenario) and run it. Run it hard might help with the blow by.

You mentioned you run a 30 miles of rough dirt roads ever day. Is that all you run? If so, the newer emissions trucks won’t like it much. I’m run a shop for a fleet of dd15’s that run 80% of their life on the roads you describe. Until your comfortable finding and repair wire harness issues, check fail codes and guessing whether it’ll shut you down or maybe you can get by, stay away from the new emissions. If you have to take it in to a shop after the your “new truck” runs out of warranty for every check engine light that de-rates the dang thing. Your $60,000 “subsidy wont last long. Also, I learned quick that warranty doesn’t cover down-time, we started fixing warrantable Items in house outside of warranty because the 3weeks the dealer had it waiting for Detroit to tell them the next thing to try wasn’t worth the $ 300 part they replaced that actually fixed it.
Long story short
Rough roads are hard on electronics

Short hauls are extremely hard on exhaust filters.

The 30 mile argument flipped me on the 60K
If that's all you do, then keep the old truck and run the #### thing.
30 miles is a nice work if you can maintain the income. I was thinking more on the order of intercontinental ranges. Like 2000 miles away on a load...
Californias 60K plus payments on a new truck that wont do the job... just for 30 miles? It uses half that just to get the lubes warmed up and circulating.Working2party and OldeSkool Thank this. -
Then again might want to take Midwest truckers advice on Cummins x15.$ 140 k - $60k = $80 k, Same as a New Truck price in 1995. It’s a tough choice. Don’t sweat it too much, It’s good to have choices, Lol

I actually run 30 miles of a bumpy dirt road and I mean bumpy as hell everyday combined with pure highway miles to make my deliveries total 600 miles every day 30 of those miles being on the bumpy dirt road other 570 miles pure freeway.
