In my case I can see it. 19 years construction after 10 driving. I need to learn qualcomm, new log regs and any stray electronics like ABS we didn't have.
But I know I could jump in a truck and haul anything anywhere right now, same as the OP, having the same number of miles driven. And I won't be missing gears either with ANY tranny thrown at me.
These companies are really more stupid than ever these days. I think they mostly just want that gov't. support check for the "schooling".

Red have you kept CDL all this time? or did you have a Chauffeur's?
If youve had a cdl, why are you wanting to go to a large outfit? a small one should hire you.

You'd better believe it. A great deal of the things that are taught will seldom if ever be used. But, it's not the schools that decide what's to be taught. It's state requirements. I just got done with the driving classes at a community college. I was the only one in a class of 15 people who paid their own way. Everyone but me got government assistance. I couldn't get a penny since I had been in the transportation industry. Therefore I wasn't a "displaced person". Go figure...

Check with your local unemployment office. We are a small carrier and I got tired of wasting money on newspaper ads looking for drivers, so I registered with the unemployment office. Found the best driver ever through them and he is still with us today.

I will tell you, though, that weeding through the applicants was an eye opener. If an applicant didn't take the time to provide accurate work histories, specific skills, and basically fill out the application completely, I didn't bother calling them.

    Good luck to you.

You're in Columbus Ohio, have you tried all the carriers that are based here? You could try Dist-Trans over on the south end, they are the house carrier for the warehouse. A lot of LTL and container companies in your area. Also, have you tried BST in London Ohio? That's not the carrier of the century but it might be a start and I've been told they were looking for drivers. Several big carriers over in the Groveport industrial area too. Good luck.

I dropped the license, not needing it. I don't want to go with a large outfit; they're the ones screwing with drivers. I have been prehired by Watkins Shepard and am trying to get to school to recertify, if you can call it that.

Well Biscuit... That is one messed up deal you got there i dont know what to tell as far as finding a job. I know its hard to take but alot of companies are doing away with pet programs nowadays. Crete has had one for 100 yrs and theirs ended i think this month. Good luck and keep us posted

The reason that a lot of companies have a no pet policy anymore is pretty simple. A lot of people who had pets in the truck, let the pet do nasty things in it. Or let the pet chew the inside of the truck up. It's costly to clean up and repair the inside of a tractor. The other issue now is pet dander. When the truck goes to another person, that person may have allergies. Lastly, and please don't shot the messenger... Some companies did time studies and the people with pets weren't at the top in terms of productivity. So, there you have it... No pets allowed.

Well, it's been a few days since I posted and I thank everyone for their comments, opinions, suggestions, etc. I am taking today off from my job search. The weekend was a fun long one. Saturday was poker night. Sunday I went golfing, got sunburned. I am still getting calls today from one of those sites that I filled out a general app with.
Answering a couple of the responses (I haven't figured out how to put the quote in the response yet)....
Yes I have checked with the unemployment office. Here in Ohio on their web page they have section full of ads by job classification. The only things I saw there for local paid the same as what I get for unemployment each week or less. And their OTR listings were mostly for driving schools or the large companies.
To luvtheroad... I worked for Dist Trans a few years back and when they found out I was wanting to buy a truck at the time (I had not bought one nor had I even decided whether or not I was going to take that step at that point) they brought me into the office and gave me a choice to leave on my own or be fired. Nice company, huh? And with BST I have not heard a lot of good from other drivers who have gone there recently. Including the pet thing, which you are right, a lot of companies have done away with and I agree completely with the reasons you state. But, I when I came off the road to haul gas I had no reason to believe I would have to go back OTR and so I finally got my pup that I had wanted for a long time. And now I am NOT going to get rid of him for any reason. I'm kinda attached to the little fella. LOL
And for those who say to stay away from the big companies, I am just opening myself up to every possibility. And to find out what is out there and where the industry stands at this point. Which it seems to be in bad shape. One company that would not take me because of the lack of recent OTR I called back the next day and told them I graduated driving school 18 months ago and been driving OTR since then and they offered me a job without asking my background.
Sooo.... I am still looking and will keep everyone posted what happens in my search and what I find. I still have 18 week of unemployment left plus whatever extensions may be out there too. LOL
Oh, and keep the suggestions for any good companies comming!!
    Thanks Biscuit

    luvtheroad Thanks this.
