i'm sorry, but the question still has remained unanswered, for me at least:

i still do not see the advantage, in LTL, with 2 pups over a 53' van, ESPECIALLY with terminal-to-hub-and back to home terminal runs.

Ok, with x-tra board last week, i DID have 2 pups going in the same direction, but with different final destinations, but this is RARE and thus, does not seem to be worth the extra expense and time in the big picture.

Please discuss, in great detail, at your earliest convenience.

Customer 1 loads Pup A, all going to their hub.

Pup B is a crossdock from several customers.

Like he said above. The ability to create more solid loads. In ltl the more you touch it the more you lose "damages, misloads, anything". You can create head loads more easily with pups. Strip the tail and reload. You can also get 2 pups unloaded quicker. You can also strategically place a pup with specific freight in a door closer to where you need it and not have a whole bunch of extra freight with it to deal with. That's in large breaks with supervision that has a clue.

Too busy for thinking. I doubt the loader has time to stop and think, let alone have the pup pulled out and replaced by a 53. Even if they did they would have to stop what th y were doing to make it happen. Something they don't really have time for.

Same deal up the ladder. Be glad your the driver that has the time to contemplate it. :)

I usually pull one loaded with breakbulk and one loaded with proper. The breakbulk facility only has to strip out the one pup and leave the proper for the inbound crew.

One thing I've noticed at the LTL yards around here. There is no room for a 53 to back to the dock.

That’s how it was with my first linehaul run here. 1 load was Michigan bound, usually Detroit, and the other was for the Youngstown terminal.

In other words a big 53 can take it all with many stops.

With an operation that knows what they’re doing, you’ll run out with two pups loaded with freight bound for destinations, and bring two back loaded with freight FROM two different places.

A run to Richmond for us might have one going to Florida and the other to Atlanta, with a backhaul of one or the other and a load that originated in Texas.

The idea is to save dock time and minimize freight handling.

Sure, but then there may be that one skid that has to come off first when it was probably the first thing loaded. That requires stripping the entire trailer, which may very well include Murphy’s Law to some degree.

Also, one can pull a set loaded to the degree of a longbox with a single screw.
