I was making over $100k with my Hotshot just running Texas for the last 3 and Texas up to the Midwest the prior two years. But this winter and the beginning of the year were brutal and I decided to shutdown before I lost too much.Prior to that I worked the oilfield in North Dakota running a hydrovac making $150k a year. And now I’m back in a hydrovac just not making near as much and was looking at options so that when I’m ready to be an owner op again I know what part of trucking to be in.

I have a friend that has regular motorhomes , not big coaches, retrofitted for the entertainment industry . They use them for wardrobe, hair and makeup, video editing etc. He gets $180 an hour plus mileage and they’re alway booked out spring , summer and fall, and a little in the winter . They sit on location most of the day . I work freelance for him now and then. Sometimes he’ll have 10 motorhomes at a big event sitting for 18 / 20 hours or sometimes around the clock. They use them for movie shoots , fashion shoots, music videos, cable tv series etc. He makes a very good living. It’s hard to get into , you have to have industry connections and you have to be super reliable
And have back up motorhomes at the ready if one goes down.
It’s not trucking , but it’s probably one of the most profitable Gigs out there .BUMBACLADWAR, Midwest Trucker and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
It’s like playing roulette. It’s not whatcha know...it’s who ya know. Or maybe that whole right place/right time thingy.
A buddy of mine finally decided to become an owner operator after 20 years of “thinking about it” (I’ve been independent for almost 22 years myself).
After hours of picking my brain on how to go about it, he acted like he didn’t want to deal with the headache of being independent. So, when he finally pulled the trigger, he decided to lease to Landstar pulling a step. Long story short, one of the agents had a “fire” that needed put out on a dedicated run and my buddy answered the proverbial call of duty and subsequently, landed a permanent spot on this dedicated run. It was like hitting the lottery. Only someone like @blairandgretchen or @Old Man wouldn’t be jealous. -
