Creepiest road I've ever found is US 30 going past Gettysburg battlefield on a rainy night. A rainstorm had just gone through, and steam was rising up off the road. That with the lights in the area made for a creepy scene.
Creepy roads. That freak you out.

Ten years later turnabout fair play. 700 Indians attacked a few dozen and themselves were held off in 1874.
A relatively important part of the growing Frontier at the time. After the situation, Indians were relocated per USA Policy at that time.
That's the brief. Short and easy.Lepton1 and Intothesunset Thank this. -
I just stopped in to say I'm surprised there are this many posts in this thread. I don't find anything to be creepy, it's just a state of mind.
Paranoid? Yes, with good reason as I'm sure many people who have been driving for a while will agree. However, it seems like we're trained specifically not to have the type of mentality that gets creeped out, rather we're trained to analyze and respond very quickly.
Raining/Snow? Possible loss of traction.
Fog? Los visibility, prepare to stand on the brakes.
Woods? Possible deer/elk/moose hazard.
Ghost suddenly appear in the middle of the road? Probably not a ghost, yet. Lmao.tscottme, Trucker61016, sevenmph and 3 others Thank this. -

Several years ago I was driving along one of those southern Missouri alphabet roads at night and in the distance I see the tail lights of a dryvan or reefer trailer pulled over on the narrow shoulder and lit up. When I pass the thing though there was no truck attached.
The lights were on but the head was cut off!speedyk, LoSt_AgAiN, D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this. -

The other thought to Custer, Remember he was Brevet General One star at around 23 years old. He was at Gettysburg with 2000+ Calvary on Day three, if I remember right, General Lee massed III Corps Longstreet and close to 15000 infantry supported by about 145 artillery vs the Union Center. The Artillery rocked the windows of the white house and were heard in thunder elsewhere on the east coast that day. 15000 moved out.
At that time Lee had 6000 Calvary with Stuart come wide around and hoped to get into the Union Artillery being massed quickly from Arty Reserve just to the rear of the threatened area center of the line as the Confederates came. The hope was that Sturart would get among all those guns and people with each one and chop em up with sabers then maybe either tear into the Union HQ and supply or Tear into the Center of the Union from behind.
Custer saw the situation and moved in against this 6000 horse with 2000 of his own. after quite a fight Stuart was forced off. And the union artillery which was massing on the battle line while Confederate shells overflew everything and landed in a box about 2 miles by about 4 because of technical problems shooting and firecontrol in those days, just clean missed the Union.
When the time came the Union Arty opened. And the confederates reached the trees that were the objective for around 30 minutes before they were chopped up. Essentially the entirety of Picketts Division, a number thousands of men essentailly wiped out on that mile field. Along with thousands of others.
Custers Action in Gettysburg is not widely known. Most people who go there do not really understand the range of the battle in that week of 1863 covering a area of about 3 miles by 5. 155000 fought, approximately 56000 casualties, prisoner, missing, killed etc. on both sides.
Custer was flamboyant in his way and very showboat. After the war, he was just another light colonel wanting formal promotion to Colonel, but in those days other Colonels from the war had to die for him to promote. So that was roughly two or three steps back down in rank from Brevet General. Which is not a permanent promotion.
What Gibbon and some Union Artillery a few days march DID possess was a number of standard Gatling Guns. You stick a tube of 100 cartridges on top of a rotator with 6 barrels, empty it by cranking in a few moments. And repeat. You would have mowed down people in formal lines of Civil War with that.
And probably erased clouds of indians and their horses as easily as a kid rubbing out a math problem on paper.
Custer just did not want to wait. And bit off more than he can chew.Cattleman84 Thanks this. -
