Handing In My CDL

    Over the last week I've had to make a decision that did'nt come easy - that is to hand in my CDL due to illness. The Meningitis I went down with in July 05 is still affecting me to a degree - getting it at age 53 took its toll along with an obvious question of some brain damage due to the virus infection, the blood pressure I had - 210/156 and the temperature I had, 105, on admittence, there is some damage - the Doctors may not say it but I feel it! Along with picking up every bug that goes around with the compromised immune system that came with Meningitis, my mood swings too much and patience which is an essential for driving a truck is almost non-existent now. I also suffer from tiredness which comes on suddenly - depression - still suffer from headaches, light sensitive, short term memory lapses. body thermostat out of sync, problems with my legs etc!

    As much as I try to justify staying in the drivers seat, I know that luck has been with me since I started back, that I have'nt had an accident. I'm very much anti drug for any reason so I resist taking anything except those I need to like Lipitor for Cholestrol and Centrum for the Vitamins. I also have to think of the wife with her medical condition plus the Hernia operation I had last month which still lets me know it was done.

    I used to raise Arabian Horses in Australia - the Arabs called them "Drinkers Of The Wind" as they held their head high with pride! I can say I'm proud to have served with the industry and had some good times along with the bad and I'll hold my head high (will have a beer instead of the Wind) and salute those making a living out of a tough, demanding job!

    I'll keep my postings going here as I have some unfinished business with Harris Trucking of Lynchburg, Werner, and JB Hunt to finalise.

    Sorry you had to make such a tough choice BUT thank you for doing it, your right about luck and your choice might have saved you or someone else terrible greif.

    Maybe you can find something to keep you happy back in the horse world?...I used to have a "wind drinker", loved him to death. I hope not having the stress of driving will help you feel better, and please dont leave, everyone is welcome here.

    You can still stay in the industry and not drive on the road. Yard jockey, load supervisor, dispatch, and other jobs. You may be making a wise decision by not being out there on the road driving, but the industry needs people that have been out there to give the powers that be in some of the terminals a fresh opinion on how things ought to be run.

    Sorry to read your post about giving up your CDL, but there are other things you can do in the industry, some things you might want to keep your license for and just give up the road driving part of it. We have enjoyed your posts and look forward to reading more of them in the future, no matter what your job future holds:happy3: .

    Aussie, unless your state asks for it you do not need to turn in your CDL. I can no longer drive due to diabetes and a few diabetes caused heart attacks. I am done, but I still carry my CDL and will not turn it back in. It is mine, I earned it and payed for it.

    I was one of the first people in the country to get one back in 1990. My chaufers was do to expire at that time. The examiner had never given an examination and asked if I'd show him how to do the pretrip. I felt pretty good about that and I guess I still do.

    Don't give it up, your health may improve in the future and you'll have it ready to go.

    I was down to the drivers license bureau a month a go and a guy was turning his in because he did not drive anymore and he didn't want to pay the extra to keep it. It is only a few bucks and I couldn't belieev he was doing that.

    yeah man, don't turn in your license, its still yours for driving your 4 wheeler around. when it comes time to renew, just don't get the haz-mat/finger-printing B.S. you would still need a drivers license, and you earned your current one (at whatever cost too) so don't give it up, plus its a very good ID card as well.

    you can still do other jobs (i would presume) like yardman (like i'm doing now), or loading dock, supervisory, or dispatch, or even safety...........

    so your (and all of us) options are still there.....

    don't leave the boards either, as i'll have to come over there and kick yer ### if you do.............

    You have each given me food for thought - my license expires 11/11. The Hazmat and Tanker endoresments won't be added if I decide to keep it going. As for yard work, I know of 2 locations here - Frito Lay and Glad - I can forget Big Island as I've already applied with Swing and was knocked back with the unfavourable reports put on by Harris, Werner and JB - they are in my sights.

    hey Aussie, i have been saying for about a couple of weeks now that i now work as a yardman for Ryder at one of their contract customers. i told also that i get paid an hourly wage, and delivery pay ($28.00) for any time i bring a loaded trailer from the main building to the warehouse, a mere 7(?) miles away. i also get mileage pay (34¢ per mile) EACH AND EVERY TIME my tractor goes out into the road...........empty or loaded.............( and that warehouse run is only about 30 minutes total time, and an easy $28.00/ & mileage to take...!!)

    i also get time & a half for anything over 8 hours per day.

    with all of these, i make just a tad under my former job, and work way less hours than ever before. about 45-48 hours per week as compared to about 50-60 hours, and NO TRAFFIC to deal with, 5 days a week............

    seriously, think/consider yardman's work.............you might be outside in the elements, but that's for only a few minutes at a time...........

    i think frito-lay is teamsters too.................(at least up here it is)

    Went to Glad (Clorox) today, start Friday - not in trucks - on the floor. Have also applied for a technical job there as well - have the computer qualifications that will help me in that respect - 12 hour day - work 3 day shifts, day off, 3 night shifts, 3 days off, 4 day shifts, 7 days off. As much overtime as I want - home every night - 30 minute run to Amherst each way. Going to keep with the postings. Can't have "Aunty Jack" getting upset!
