Ok, so ive been with Crete as a solo since January.Things were good at 1st, but quickly have gone downhill. People, im barely getting 1700 miles a week on average. Everytime I make a run, I end up sitting at my destination. For example, Mississippi-2 days. LA-3 days. GA-2 days.MD-3 days. And right now Im in PA. Ive been sitting here since Friday night. I wont be going anywhere today, and possibly Mon tomm. There is no layover pay. I was told when I started here that any HAZ MAT load pays a penny more a mile. I took a hazmat load from Baltimore to Toldeo. Turns out that was a big lie. Im out of the Columbus terminal and it seems like my terminal manager could give a #### about any of these issues. Ive tried everything, but in the end......very little miles.Talked to another new driver who recently finished Crete orientation. He overheard an office lady saying Crete has 600 DRIVERS MORE THEN THE AVAILABLE FREIGHT!(Which I dont doubt the least and really ticks me off)Yet, they keep on hiring. Look, I dont wanna talk bad about Crete. But im just telling you whats going on here. I have 4 months experience which isnt much. I dont know what to do people. Should I stick it out, or is it time to move on??? i realize the economy is bad and all, but then again, I need a certain amount of money a week in order to survive. Sometimes, I regret(though I hated it)quitting my factory job. At least I had a steady income there. Anyways, let me know what would be the best move if possible. Thank you and be safe.
Dissapointed. Need a pep talk/advice

I feel for you, I really can relate to your situation. It sounds almost exactly like Bill's experience at Celadon, except 1700 miles is more than he averaged. The thing is, it is no better OFF the road. Bill has been driving cab and it is HORRIBLE. Here's the kicker, as bad as it was, and it was pretty rough, he is just about 2 wks away from orientation with another OTR company, even though we swore we were done with freight. He wanted to get into household moving, got qualified by a major HHG company, and due to the economy, they can't hire him this season. I am not trying to tell you to stick it out, just really think about the pros and cons of whatever you decide to do because things are kinda bad everywhere. Best of luck to you.

hang in there driver!! now is NOT the time to jump ship, be glad you are getting the miles you are as SOME drivers are NOT getting that many.
ithinkican Thanks this. -
Because the industry has changed so much,I suggest sticking it out.It may feel as if you are being played and punked but considering that the current economic downturn may get worse and that you are currently employed BUT are lacking experience, hanging on and shedding/minimizing the hositlity you feel is in your best interest.
After your year or better, hopefully our country's situation will begin to rebound for the better.
Tough decision but a decision that you will have to deal with now and then again in the future.Dealing w/it properly now will position you for the good later. -
Can only echo, what everyone else has said stick it out, there aren't to many options right now with freight slow, and you only having 4 months experience..
luvtheroad Thanks this. -
Yep, I guess sticking it out is the best way to go. Not what I wanna hear, but at least your all being honest and not sugar coating it. And it all makes scense with the current economic situation and AT LEAST i have a job. Sitting just gets to me after so long. Im sure its the same for alot of others

I agree that you really should stick it out. Job hopping is never a good thing, and what you're goin' through with Crete is the same or worse somewhere else.
With regard to them continuing to hire, I think that speaks to the amount of turnover that Crete (as well as other TL carriers) are experiencing. All in all, I think you are far better off riding this thing out. -
You should read the Crete thread on here from Evertrucker. You are not alone driver, we are all in the same boat right now.

What's going to happen in 2010? A few Senators and Congressmen get elected?
Obama screwed up firing Wagoner from GM. If I remember right, GM said it didn't need to borrow more money at this time, it's stock soared from 1.90 to $ 3.54 a share. The whole DOW went up. Obama fired Wagoner and the stock plummeted to $ 1.80 and the whole market tanked.
Im a Crete driver too,it sucks sitting around for days. I get frustrated too. And then you keep hitting the good freight areas and it's great. If you're going to sit for a day or so, find a good watering hole and relax. It's good to get out and talk to other drivers or the locals.
They told me a Haz-Mat load doesn't pay more. I just got my TWIC CARD, only because it might help getting a load. And someday we'll have to have it.
