1: Your equipment; tires, lights, mud flaps, etc...
You need to be constantly checking everything you can see while driving. You need to know ASAP if there is a problem.
Example, if a tire goes down while driving and you catch it soon enough, you can stop and prevent other tires from blowing, and damage to your equipment.
2: Your load; are all your straps, chains, binders, bulkhead, etc, all secure? Tarp staying down and secure?
And don't think being a door slammer excuses you from being mindful of your load securement.
3: Traffic awareness; are any other vehicles around? Is someone tailgating? Is someone going to be passing you soon? Any emergency vehicles coming up behind you?
Example; you're in the #2 lane on a 3 lane highway, there is a motorcycle following you. You see your exit is approaching in a couple miles so it's time to get in lane #3. When you finally look at your mirrors, the motorcycle is no longer behind you, where did he go? Unfortunately you have no idea because you weren't checking your mirrors, what do you do, blink and pray?
Finally, if you think checking your mirrors every few seconds is tiring, you should consider seeing a doctor.Last edited: Jun 8, 2019
