ANYONE can get the CDL and learn to drive a big truck. People that need instructions on how you get water out of their boot learned to do this job. Youjust need to learn it and practice.

If you don't enjoy baing alone all day, every day this job is not for you. If your family wants you home to change a lightbulb or they are declaring an emergency, this job is not for you.

You're biggest decision if you want to enter is where to work, not what school to go to. Any and all schools teach you to pass the statw test for your CDL. ALL of them can do it. But you decide what your experience will be like when you pick a company to work for. FIRST choose a trucking company to work for, speak to drivers there, THEN decide how to get the CDL. Some trucking companies offer their own school, and some companies only hire newbies from certain schools. Half of companies offer Tuition Reimbursement which can pay for CDL school UNLESS YOU PAY for CDL school by cash or credit card. Even if you don't need to borrow money TR may only work if you DO borrow money. If you have a stable work history, clean driving record, can pass ANY drug test you are in high demand. Be choosey. There are soome great and some awful companies. Do a google search for trucking companies in/near your city. I would only look at other companies after you have ruled out nearby companies.

  4. since you dont have bills and are single.

Try out a test run. If you can take off work for 3 days. rent a truck [IMG]

(yes its tall be careful its tall.)

Pick a place atleast a day or day and half away. drive their and back. This is a mini-trip it doesnt have all the issues due to lack of weather and such.

obey all signs and see how you feel after. Pay attention to the semi's and watch what they do on the road. Copy them in every aspect. Just dont cut them off or tailgate.

Good advice here. I can add this one thing. I'm looking at taking CDL classes at the local community college. Schneider has on their web site they offer tuition reimbursement so I called and asked if that applied even if you pay for independent CDL school out of pocket? The recruiter told me that yes reimbursement applies if you pay out of pocket, you'd just need to provide proof of payment. So essentially you'd need to show your paid tuition bill. The tuition reimbursement is paid out starting 30 days after hire at $200/mo.

In the past we have had a few people report here after paying for their CDL school that their company TR was not available to them. As in most things in this industry, find out how your company handles things. Do not assume anything.

It does seem like something you'd want to get in writing! ;-)

If you don't mind putting in nearly double the hours for roughly the same pay ...go for it. This industry has turned to crap and is getting worse by the day . I recommend you stay put and enjoy some kind of a normal life.

Lol automated trucking is not even close. Try 100+ years.. They cant even make a autopilot car not be able to crash.. Let alone a 80k rig .. Dont believe all the hype. The techies are known to do lots of drugs

They can't build a car that can recognize a truck as something it can't drive through yet.
I donot see any automated trucks , unless they build truck only highways for them, and they can't manage to keep up the ones we have now.
Even if they managed to build new roads, got the trucks perfected , they would still be maned, just as much as they are now.
