I bet it's just a hoax to get the big computer compnaies to spend money. Just look at all the money the anti-virus companies are spending, then add the universities that are researching it, the money any major computer using company is spending on stopping the infection.

Linux... the best anti-virus software... period.:yes2557:

My wife's laptop just got wiped out by Spyware Protect 2009. Of course, she couldn't find the recovery CD's, so I tried making a set of disks off my laptop. Got all the way through the install where it asks for the product key, typed in the key off the bottom of her computer... no go.

Tried the key from mine... no go. Mickeysoft says we had to buy a new disk. Ah, no thanks, I friggin paid for the license when I bought the computer. Go to hell Mickeysoft!

Soo... I downloaded Ubuntu Linux and put that on there for her. She hates it right now because she's not used to it. But I think it'll grow on her.

If I could get DDL to run under Linux, I'd wipe my laptop clean and put Linux on it too.

AVG does all the "protecting" the average user requires.
Its not a system hog like Norton,MCaffee etc.
People buy into the "spam" virus spoofs those products generate to get the users Dependant on their services.

People dump the garbage and get the good stuff.Ive used it for the last 4 years with no issues or virus threats.

Getting DDL to run on ubuntu would not be a problem. There is a program called WINE, which allows you to run 99% of the windows programs out there.

    http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wine
the link is an easy tutorial.

WINE will even run high end Windows games. The only reason I'm still using windows is because my Sprint EVDO modem won't work at full speed under Ubuntu, at least that's what Sprint says. I haven't actually tried it yet though.

Yep, I know about Wine, there are a few other issues though'I'm not completely sold on Ubuntu yet.

The biggest issue for my wife is the NOAA weather site, which crashes Firefox under Ubuntu. If she can't view that site, she doesn't want it. I tried in vain, over the weekend, to get any JRE (Sun included) and Java plugin to run without crashing. A Java applet on a web page kills the browser or uses up all the CPU cycles while constantly accessing the disk, requiring a hard reset of the computer. Very odd in Linux... to not be able to kill -9 a process.

Flash works ok. I installed the latest 64 bit alpha plugin from Adobe... works like a charm!

And then there is the overall slowness of the system. I used to run Gnome under Red Hat 5.0 and it ran a hell of a lot faster than this. And that was on a 350mhz with 128MB of RAM. I'm gonna give it the benefit of the doubt for a little while longer... then try another distro. If all else fails, I'll just get her another computer with Vista. :puke:

And as far as your modem... are you using wvdial to make the connection? Mine actually connects faster than it does under Windows (I'm running Ubuntu off a flash drive on my laptop). Your init string probably just needs to be tweaked.

Like I said, I haven't actually tried it yet, I just haven't had the time. My old laptop ran nothing but ubuntu, I got a new one about 6 months ago with Vista Basic on it, and I'm still using it. Sprint is telling me that if I run Ubuntu I'll only get 500 kbps max, I don't know if that's accurate or not. One of these days when I get some free time I'll give it a try.

I have a desktop at the house that my wife uses and she insists on having Internet Explorer. That can be done easily, check this out:

That might help with that weather page. There is also Opera and Konquerer, Firefox isn't the only native browser for linux out there.
