Hell I had to ride a bus for over an hour to school until I got in high school and turned 16. And I couldn't wait to get my driver's license so I didnt have to ride the bus anymore. And drove a gas guzzling V8 to school. All of us used to ride up and down the boulevard in town after school and on weekends wasting gas. It was only a dollar a gallon. You could cruise a lot on $5 even in a gas guzzler. Hahaha!! That was only 25-27 years ago. Kids these days dont even care if they have a driver's license or not.

It's a bit different when big trucks, cars, cyclist and pedestrians, are all competing for the same stretch of narrow road in an old European city. That's why all European trucks have guard rails along side, to prevent cyclists and pedestrians from falling in front of the rear wheels.

    I can confirm they work.
Had a young boy fall with his bike, without those he would have been under my wheels.
It was actually the Brits who first started to use those.

Tatra is doing well in the Netherlands. This 10 x 10 x 8 truck was bought by a company in foundation technology. It will be used to transport heavy prefabricated concrete elements. The truck has a legal GVW of 50 tonne (110,000 lbs), but technically it will be more like 60 tonne. It uses the well known military tyre size 16R20, and no you can't drive faster then 90 km/h on those tyres. The crane is a 59 tonne-meter version with a reach of 17 metre (55 feet). The truck has a length of almost the legal limit of 12 metre (39 feet).

    Picture this.
Bicycle path next to road.(new paths are no longer right next to the road)
Kids being kids, they don't allways think.
Ride next to each other to chat.
They bump each other when not paying enough attention.
Kid on the right has no problem.
Kid on the left falls/moves into the actual road.
Truck is at that point besides the kid.
then you see those safetyfeatures work.

What i described above is not fiction.
    It happend to me.
Watched it unfold in my mirrors.
I'm still gratefull i had those alu bars at the side.
I do not know how i would handle killing a kid, eventough i had zero fault in it.

Ps a big storage box at the side off the trailer is also seen as being legal.

Cat sdp, KVB, sebas9558 and 3 others Thank this.
