I have a 05 mxs 475 acert with 540250 miles on it. I've owned it for 8 months and it will use a gallon of oil every 6000 miles. Just tracked down sevice records from the company that traded the truck in and from what I see this has been normal oil usage since new.My question I guess,is this normal for the acert? My 3406E would use a gallon every 10000 miles.

Think Cat will tell you that is acceptable oil consumption according to their guidelines, but it sounds a bit excessive to me.
We usually say you should not use any oil until halfway through a service interval, then you should add approx 1 gallon between then and the service and it should be down to about the add mark on the stick when its due for a service. Thats the ususal with Cat oil, doing 20000km service intervals, towing 96000 pounds.joey8686 Thanks this. -
Don't know if things are still the same with Cat or with newer engines but on the older ones years ago, in order for Cat to tear it down under warranty it had to use 1 gallon of oil every 500 miles.

Is your motor actually burning the oil or is being thrown out the breather tube. From all the info I have gathered I can tell ya that the ACERTs do use more oil. For one they have more oil being used in the top end which turns the oil into a mist then you add the extra boost which adds extra crankcase pressure and the oil mist ends up out the breather tube. CAT's fix to this problem...a filter kit that goes on the breather tube and has a drain leading back to the pan. It kinda works, but then you got another filter to change and more stuff on the side of the engine.

my 2 cents worth, I have an 05 BXS that used 3 or 4 gallons of oil between changes at 20,000 miles. Changed to Mobil Delvac and problem solved.
