Very true. I know quite a few trucking company owners, all the way from two trucks up to a hundred, and not a single one of them can disassociate himself from the business.
Maybe after a certain point it might be possible to hire good managers and step away from the day to day aspects of the business. Even then, you'd be putting your trust in people who had no real stake in the success of the business other than a paycheck.
As volatile as trucking is it takes a hands on dedication to run it and run it tight.
LOL...besides, at a roughly 5 to 7 percent annual profit scenario...and that's in a good year... I think the OP could find a better use for his money.

There are days I want to take a day off and say I will relax no matter what then a $6000 load appears at $6 per mile and I jump out of bed.

Why isn't 10% achievable? Almost every single mutual fund on the market has long term averages of 10% gains.

I’m not sure where to even start. Anything is possible and you can do whatever you want. What other people do or what is the industry norm means nothing.

Passive and trucking don’t even begin to go together. However, you can put people in place to where they do 90% of the actual work and you steer them in the right direction and make the bigger decisions. Even if you reach this point, thinking about all of this stuff is still all consuming.

I’ve been at my shop/yard maybe once a week or less for this entire year so far. Occasionally it’s been 3 weeks without leaving my home other then to do physical therapy. I’ve had two hip replacements inside of 8 weeks and I couldnt walk for probably at least 8 weeks before that. I basically have only gone in to interview people and conduct drive tests, my team handles everything else. I’ll always keep a close pulse on my hiring as that’s a gut instinct that is basically impossible to teach.

My business is very successful but I spent years building a team of people and grooming and molding them into being exactly how I want and need them to be. So, even though I’m not there I still talk, text, and email every day. Some days are heavier then others when things are going wrong. Some days go great and we don’t hardly talk but that’s rare. Still, I think about this stuff, read, research, strategize, plan, etc 24 hours per day 7 days per week. My wife can just look at me and will ask me what’s wrong? She knows when something is going on just by my expression and mannerism.

So, the answer is yes and no. I’d say what I’ve built is extremely rare but 11.5 yrs ago I had a dream and goals and I’ve angled and worked towards this since literally day one. I’m completely ate up with this stuff though, it’s 12:22am and I’m on TTR talking about trucking if that tells you anything. I just was in my Omnitrac going over fuel mileage trends, following a new drivers progress, and seeing where all the trucks are in comparison to where I think they should be. lol.

    Go for it!
