Fact is, if someone decides they want to drive a truck they aren't going to let you or me disuade them. What I can do is make sure that they are trained and prepared. If I don't do it, someone who cares less will.

I have spent hundreds of hours, and a lot of my personal money putting resources online that help my students prepare to get their license. I enjoyed being a truck driver, I enjoyed the time I spent training new drivers while I was working for a trucking company, and now I enjoy helping others get started if that is what they choose to do.

Your own message has got the true aspect of CDL schools. You train your students to get their CDL and you show them where the bottom feeders are. BTW a pre-hire means nothing. I would be impressed if you guaranteed your training and gave refunds if the student didn't get employed after 6 months.

I will give your school credit for at least having a more thorough screening process, then some of the student stories I'm reading here on lately. :biggrin_25514:

Again about bottom feeders! Were you really fortunate enough to start your career with a top of the line company? I started driving with TransAm, is that a bottom feeder company? I really enjoyed working for them. I bought a truck from Schneider and worked for them for a year and a half, are they bottom feeders?

Is there a website somewhere that separates companies into columns... bottom feeders and non bottom feeders. Please let me know for future reference.

I know all too well the value of a pre-hire. And there are some companies who's prehires aren't worth the paper they are printed on. Covenant Transport will send a pre-hire on vitually anybody and we don't even consider them pre-hires. Swift sends an auto response pre hire on every body that fills out an application, but it's not for a job it's for the Swift Training Academy. Pre-hires in themselves are quite worthless, but a verified pre-hire is legitimate. This means that we have contacted the carrier. The student gives us permission to disclose everything we know about him and we do. My students do not get turned around because of a misdemeanor or a ticket or accident that the carrier didn't know about prior to orientation.

No, we don't guarantee a job. And it's difficult to give a money back guarantee because most of our students don't pay anything to go to school. We write a paper loan for the training and in most cases we don't get a nickel if the student doesn't go to work. Even when the State WIA pays for the training, they do not pay us for the student, until it has been verified that they are actively employed. If they don't go to work, or for any reason decide not to go to work, the school loses the cost of their training.

There's a real fast way to tell about bottom feeders or a good company. How many drivers retire from that company. I wouldn't know about your company but I can look and yes there is a site where you can tell if the company is worth anything. Safestat. Plus you said they had no benefits so yeah I'd pass that one up.

I was pretty lucky with my driving career. I started out in FLA at 12½ a mile and ran 7 southern states. It was very hard work but I enjoyed that when some other drivers didn't. I protected my Class A then CDL so when the time came I made $23.50 an hour and was paid for every minute I was there. No oil company that I know will advertise for jobs and the last one I was at had a 5 year waiting list and your record had to be perfect. I took many pre-hires with companies that ran on the bottom and I walk away. I had enough sense and money to choose my jobs.

Maybe that answered your question but I doubt it.

The job I've always wanted, won't hire you unless you've been at your current employer for at least 5 years. They don't care how much experience you have.

Well that's not entirely true. You would have at least 5 years.

My daughter wasn't guaranteed a job after five years of college. My son is in his fifth year as well, and there's no guarantee he'll find work in his field, either.

And their "training" cost a whole lot more than $4,500. It all depends on the job market -- and it is the individual's responsibility to take that into consideration when choosing their career.

This last job was a friend of the family, had 10 trucks and ran a pretty tight ship. What he didn't offer in benefits, he made up for with decent pay, good regular runs and a overall good working atmosphere.

Yes, you did answer my question. Basically any company that has to advertise for drivers is a bottom feeder.

I guess you have a point.

However, most people have to start on the bottom, so i guess they don't have much choice but to be sucked up by the garbage fish. If you take the bottom feeders out, you end up with a bunch of slime in the tank. Who is going to clean it?:biggrin_2554:
