Hi Guys
What paperwork, authority etc is needed to truck through Canada to get to Alaska?
What calls do I need to make to minimize my time through customs?
Is their a online Canadian trucking regulations page like we have on the DOT's website?
thanks,
Andrew

This should help http://www.tc.gc.ca/aboutus/prov.htm
The J.J. Keller website has good info about Canadian requirements on logbooks and DVIR's . Two basic things . Canada requires a 36 hour restart . Don't go in after taking only 34 in the past two weeks . They require you to have logs from the past 14 days . Your paperwork will have to be forwarded to a Canadian broker . You will need a Canadian Customs Invoice and PARS barcode . http://www.cjllogistics.com/CCI.pdf . The shipper should be familiar with the CCI's . The carrier needs an account with a Canadian broker like Livingston International to get barcodes . It only takes 3 hours in most cases to have a load accepted by customs once the paperwork is faxed to the broker .Stroked F550 Thanks this. -
Hi Rick
Thank you for the info...
Does the Canadian broker (Livingston) provide the CCI or do I need to fax it to them and then they fill it out with the shipping info?
Is a In Transit Manifest the same thing as a CCI?
Does the broker fax me back all the paperwork or do they fax it straight to customs?
If all the stuff is faxed 3+ hours ahead of time how long does it take to physically clear customs?
To run through the different provinces are their any additional fees or licenses I need to obtain/pay for?
When I am going back into the U.S. (Alaska) or lower 48 what documentation do I need to provide?
thanks,
Andrew -
When I go to Canada I fax the CCI , bill of lading , and fax cover sheet found at Livingston's website to Livingston from the shipper . The fax cover sheet isn't necessary but it helps . If you don't have it you have to put the barcode , entry port , and ETA at border on the BOL . Putting it on the cover sheet makes it much easier for them to find info and speeds the process . Yes , the CCI is the same as Transit Manifest . I would fax the paperwork myself and be sure it was done and when . You will have to know the number at Livingston to call to be sure the PARS has been accepted . Some ports will turn you around if you have a failed PARS . I cross at Sarnia and if there is a problem there they let me park and go in Livingston's office . In 2 years I have only had to go to the office 4 times . I run tanker and they never inspect the load so time at the customs window is less than 5 minutes . Coming back into the U.S. they have only searched my cab once , never going into Canada . With van or flatbed time at customs is always impossible to guess . I always come back into the U.S. empty and no paperwork is required . I only run Ontario in Canada so I can't tell you about other province's regulations .

Hi Rick
I have a step deck hopefully it wont take to long to get through.
Whats does Livingston send to customs? (CCI,BOL, Coversheet w/ original barcode?)
What documents does Livingston fax me back?
When coming back into the lower 48 I will be loaded with cargo from Alaska what documentation is needed if any?
I only saw the fax cover sheet on Livingston's website. Where is the CCI on their site?
thanks,
Andrew -
Livingston won't fax anything back to you . That's what the barcode does . When Customs scans it it will give them all the needed info . The second link on my first post has a CCI you can print out . I've never hauled loads out of Canada so I can't help you with that info but I know the procedure is similar but tougher . You might get info here . http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contacts/ports/

One more thing...
If you dont have Canada on your phone plan, cut your phone off. Took a Genie manlift into upper Quebec. A Genie is considered a vehicle in Canada and Livingston did not send the proper documents for a vehicle. So I was stuck in customs on a Sunday evening. I got on the phone and made a call to Livingston. That 30 minute call cost me over $600!
Now when I get close to the border, I shut the phone off.Stroked F550 Thanks this. -
I forgot to mention that when you get to Yukon, be prepared for the most thorough DOT inspection of your entire driving career. You are required to carry blankets and food and water for 3 days. Be sure to grab a 5 gallon bucket and some small kitchen trash bags. The misquitos are lethal! If you have to dump, you'd better go in the truck if you cant get to a restroom. Some of those misquitos are about the size of a hummingbirds!
Welcome to the food chain.Stroked F550 Thanks this. -
You have a step deck, if it has a spread axle you aren't going in.
