I just fueled, showered and ate a late night snack at the Flying J in Hubbard, OH tonight. While eating at the counter, there were two waitresses discussing their new schedule with their manager. I heard one waitress saying how certain people that work there will have a hard time adapting to closing procedures. After those waitresses walked away, I asked the manager what they meant by closing since the restaurants never close. She let me know that they received an email at 9AM this morning (4/29) stating that several restaurants in their district would no longer be open 24 hours starting Sunday 5/3/09.

I asked her if there had been any formal announcements made to the public (especially us truck drivers) about this. She said that she wasn't sure and that it might be listed on their website. I searched Flying J dot com and couldn't find anything. In fact their latest entry in their press release section was dated sometime in December 2008. When that search for information turned up empty, I went to Google. I googled "Flying J Restaurants Closing" and "Flying J Press Releases" which also netted no information regarding this.

The manager on duty also asked if I'd like to see the list of locations where the restaurants would still remain open 24 hours a day. Of course I said yes and was shocked to see a list of only about 10 or 12 city names. Three that I can remember were Lake Station, IN; Lowell, IN; and Cheyenne, WY.

Looks like the recession has finally started to take its toll elsewhere in the trucking industry. I wonder how many other chain truck stops will follow suit with this.

If anyone who reads this can find any more information, please feel free to add it.

Pulling a reefer as I do gets me around, and one of the areas we get around to (even though there is little freight coming out) is Michigan. Not a lot of truckstops in some areas, so you'd think there would be enough business to go around. I stopped into the Windmill T/S - I96 exit 98 - today for a washout on the way up to the YoPuke place in Reed City. The Windmill has been around forever, and they are closing their doors permanently on Friday, May 1st. Lack of business.

Wow, I never expected the Windmill to shut down. In the mid 90's they were our fuel stop in Lansing and we even rented a building there for our truck maintenance.

That place was always packed and the food was pretty good. Did they shut down because a Pilot or some other T/S opened around Lansing? I retired in 2002 so haven't been back to that area since.

There have been many of the Flying J's that have been closing down at night for about a year. I ran into in Ehrenberg, AZ.

There's a Flyin' J further down I96, but nothing nearby. The parking lot has always been packed, and I've never thought that it would be easy to find a spot there late at night. That's what surprised me - from the number of trucks there even last night, I'd think there would be enough business to keep the place open.

Personally I think the J and any like them need to close the doors until they can come back with a quality menu and decent food to serve,a fair price wouldn't hurt either.

With TA buying out Petro their straight across garbage.
Generic over priced "left-over" buffets are by far the worst in many years.

Let'em all crash, wont hurt many drivers feelings one bit.

Flying Hook has raised the price of food so much that I now eat in my truck! But I drive mostly at Night, So I guess I am glad I do eat in my truck.

The J dropped ComData so we cant fuel there,no reason to pull on their lot.
I buy fuel from Loves/Pilot and eat else where.

Some Hands just "live" for the next opportunity patronize those joints.

I hear ya. Hubby and I look for those Mom & Pop places, which are getting fewer and fewer. The few times we DO have to eat at the J, the buffets ARE usually the thrown together left-overs from the day before...YUCK!!!

Thank goodness, we don't have to stop to eat often....fridges, microwaves, and crockpots are WONDERFUL things, aren't they?!? :biggrin_25519:
