Just so you know Feeder and Parcel are the same thing. A Feeder Driver is a semi truck driver for the original UPS, which is Parcel. Package Car is the brown delivery truck drivers who actually deliver the packages. They make the same pay that a Feeder Driver makes when pulling single trailers on an hourly job. A Feeder driver pulling doubles made approximately one dollar more an hour when I was there or about 1 cent more per mile depending on the job( Mileage or hourly). Package Car drivers work very hard for their money but they work day work. UPS freight LTL is formerly Overnight Transportation which is probably where you could possibly get decent hours in a reasonable amount of time. UPS Freight LTL makes excellent money when they top out. UPS Freight Truckload is very similar to other truckload carriers and pays a small percentage of what Parcel or LTL pays. Unfortunately the new UPS contract has changed to a two tiered pay rate for new package car drivers. Separate pay for the same work is never a good idea as it creates animosity amongst people doing the same job for different pay rates. A 5 year progression is bad enough. I don’t know how long it takes a new package car driver to get to full rate.

I thought about getting into hvac or plumbing but I have a family to take care of and can’t afford to take a pay cut from truck driving right now plus I’m thinking of the long run. Don’t want to be old still doing hvac installs. Heard it pays good though

I think a UPS LTL driver posted on this forum that they were hiring city drivers at many locations. That is probably your best bet for a set schedule working days in the shortest amount of time. They are Union, make great money, have great benefits and have a pension that is stable. The pay is slightly behind Parcel, but is their really much difference in $125,000-$140,000 verses $100,000 or so. Most people should be able to live very well on top pay at UPS LTL.

If you are a vet, I highly recommend you contacting your helmets to hardhats office in your state. They cant guarantee that you'll get into a trade, but they can def help you with the process and all. Do you still have your post-9/11 gi bill to use? If so, then you can use it dueing your apprenticeship where you'll collect E-5 w/ dependents housing allowance for whatever zip your located in. Its 100% for the 1st 6mos, 80% for the 2nd 6mos, then keeps decreasing every 6mos period by 20% til you hit journeyman.

Im in NJ and got in with the plumbers n pipefitters. I didnt use helmets to hardhats to try and 'help' ith getting in. I waited in line for an app and did my testing and interviews just like everybody else.

I had a bid to New Stanton Pa doing 2 layovers a week. Other than the start time/day Friday 2100 and 1500 Sunday, it was a great job. I was back from the second round by 1500 Monday and off the rest of the week. Worked about 30 hours and made roughly $1700 a week in 2008 unless I worked a 6th or 7th day. It was a great job until Friday night came around.

No ####, small world. I worked at the pennsauken freight terminal then was going to slide over to lawnside full-time. I literally had my start date set for 3rd week of october then got some more inside info and said nope. Sometimes the paycheck aint worth the hassle.

How long have you been with the union now? Working any refineries or power plants down there?
