I took another look, the alarm may not be going off just yet.

If you look at the block (the thing that the hook is attached to) you see two silver looking things on one of the cables. When those get too close to one another it will set an alarm off in the cab to warn the operator that he/she is about to winch the block in to the point that it hits the end of the boom. The end of the boom, which is the part with the sheaves that the cable rides in is also called a block; thus the term "two block", which usually sounds like tube lock when saying it. The reason for the alarm is that the potential exists to break the cable if the blocks connect, and consequently drop the lower block and load.

More info than anybody wants, but I thought I should explain my understanding of it anyway.

Got it, very interesting. Guess you have to put a lot of faith in the crane guys that they know what they're doing and paying attention.

They always have a helper that does all the hand signals and makes sure everything is hooked up right so I would think he watches all that too. I'll be checking it out next time we call em out for something.

    Thank you for the lesson.

Get to go out by myself for a change, been a while. Heading out here in a little bit to one of my BIL's place down at Arbuckle lake to do some drinking and lying then head out early in the morning to go fishing tomorrow with him and the other 2 BIL's. We've been trying to get together forever it seems like to do this. They all work in the oil/gas field business plus with my schedule it's been hard to put something together. Should be a great time, all 3 of em, (my wife's brothers), are stand up guys and fun to be with plus great fisherman. Pics tomorrow hopefully.

On an interesting note there was a decent size pipeline company that went bankrupt. They sold their assets at the Ritchie Bros auction Wednesday and Thursday. They had 12 PL87 pipe layers with around 700 hours. The auctioneer said a new one was around a million and 6 months out the auction was buy one or as many as you want. They bid up to $750,000, the auctioneer asked how many they wanted and the guy said all 12. 9 million in one bid. Pretty cool.
