Okay I understand what I'm reading in the manual about the differences in class A and B but what I'm not clear about is if I get a class A CDL can I drive class B if I find a job of that nature to be more suitable to my wants or needs. I'd like to be able to have every option available to me when I start looking for work such as all endorsments that I can get.

When you have a Class A CDL you can drive anything below it including class b
vechiles.
Another words with a class A you can drive almost anything that is out there. To
pull stuff like tankers, doubles and triples, hazmat, passanger bus and things of
that nature you have to have class A along with the proper endorsements. -
Thanks for clearing that up Coonass and for the quick responce. I'm actually trying to get CDL school paid for through WIA (recently unemployed) and the worker at WIA today suggested class B as something to think about but I'd much rather have class A and as many endorsements as possible so that I have as many options for work as possible.
-
Also just focus on getting your class A don't really worry about endorsements right now. I say this because you have no experiance so it's highly unlikely that you will find a job that uses hazmat or double endorsements coming out of school wait until you have a year or two under your belt. Plus it's extra money when going through school and more tests you have to take.
Tell you your WIA counsler that having a class A will open you up to many more jobs than a class b definitly more so in this economy right now.
If you have any questions about how to make it through WIA let me know I will try to answer them.Last edited: May 5, 2009
kickin chicken Thanks this. -
Like the above poster stated it is well worth going through WIA or a like
program. I went with one that was called M.E.T (Motivation Educational
Training) they paid the total cost of school, $5000, gave me a $300 food
vochure to buy food while in school, and paid me $6.50 an hour every
hour I was in school which worked out to a lil more that $1000. So it is
definitly worth the time getting approved.
One thing I do not agree with the above poster about is not worrying
about getting endorsements right now.
The more endorsement you have the better your chance and more
options you have when looking for a job. The cost of the test should be
included in the cost of schooling. I know it was with mine. In school
they taught us about all the things we needed to pass the CDL portion
of the test (Combination, Air brakes, General Knowledge) as well as the
material to get whatever endorsements we liked (Tanker, Haz Mat,
Doubles and Triples, and Passanger).
The first job I got when I came out of school allowed me to haul Haz Mat
and a couple people I went to school with went OTR and was able to
haul it also. Having endorsement opens many doors as well as loads
that you are able to haul. The MORE the BETTER. -
Thanks again your insight in very helpful as most of the information I've found on here has been.
As far as the WIA goes...I signed up for the program at the beginning of March and was told that there would not be funding until July which is fine it's only a few months. They told me that I had to be actively searching for work which I have done. Well two weeks ago I was hired by a major restaruant chain waiting tables. I purposely took this job so that I would have a flexible schedule in order to do the CDL school come July. Well the WIA worker told me that I may no longer qualify for WIA even though I was told before that it wasn't about getting just a job but a carreer. Have either of you (or anyone else) been able to work while going through one of these programs. Would I have been better off to just sit at home and wait until July and do nothing but be a bum and a mooch. I just need a little help (from WIA) I don't expect the world to be handed to me. -
Well if you where on unemplyment you probally just lost that option. When I went through WIA the two requirements where being unemployed, layed off with no call back or just flat unemployed with no income period including unemployment benifits. The other was being under employed which meant making below $9 or 10 and hr I don't remember now. If your job is paying you more than $10 then thats why you where disqulified.
But being the economy what it is they might have thrown that last one out and consider anyone with a job no matter the pay ineldgable<spelling< for WIA.
The job search is a big part of the program. It's actually the stupidest thing I have ever done. But that is one of the hoops you have to jump through. And this is the kicker about the job search and WIA. You basically have to be unemployable to get the training. The point is they want you to look for jobs and look for jobs and only then when you can't find a job will they pay for training. Obviously you can't apply for jobs they you don't obviously quilify for. Don't apply for a lawyers position unless you have the degree to back you up in other words. If you have 10 years working in a factory then thats what they expect you to apply for things that is in your scope of education and training.
And when you have applied for say 40 or 50 jobs and haven't got one then they will approve you for training in another feild so you can get a job that your qualify for.
Beleave me you want to keep persuing this WIA it's worth it I'm telling you. I will be more than willing to answer any questions you have just ask. Hang in there you make it. -
Actually exploding boy you need to get back in WIA as soon as you can I will explain more latter if you want but get back in today.
-
I actually wasn't disqualified frrom WIA and I am still in the program. The worker just said that my having a job may be an issue. Waiting tables I get $2.13 an hour plus tips. They said something about making 80% of what I was before which works out to about $7.20 an hour but then I noticed an income qualifying chart which showed $11,000 a year or less to qualify.
I'm gonna keep plugging away with it because I can't wait tables forever and I really don't want to be part of that industry anymore (restaruants for 20 years). -
Like I said you really have to drive that job search home with the WIA program. Seeing how your employed you might not have to do an extensive job search. But if you do make sure you do the follow up calls and get the name of the person in the company you applied for. Also don't just apply with applications there going to make you do a resume more than likely and they will want to see it and expect you to have sent some out to potential employers. Apply for jobs online and send resumes and put in applications the more the better.
The way I did it was to call the companys and ask if they where hiring and if they said no I sent a resume to them. Waited about 3-4 days did my follow up call. Same with the applications wait about 3 days after it was turned in and did the follow up call. Just make sure they aren't hiring before you send them in or apply. Of course you will have some who actually want you to come in for an interveiw. You will need to exclude these from the list you turn into your WIA counsler. My advice have all these steps your counsler asks of you done before the funds become avalable so you will be first on the list to go to training.
Be very proactive and positive. But also brush up on you BS skills a little too.J60608 Thanks this.
