i myself am still a rookie, 1 year in and still sometimes have trouble backing, and i stress out with some situations. Although with every passing minute it’s becoming impossible to to stress me out anymore.

So I ask all of the experienced vets out here. If you see a rookie and trust me you can tell. Walk up to them and tell them to relax and not to stress and do the job right the first time.

Really does help us guys when it’s coming from the vets.

I’ve done it myself a few times to new drivers I see having trouble and as well been given the advice when I was starting out.

    Drive on.

I stopped walking up to strangers and giving them unsolicited advice and encouragement a long time ago. I’ve learned my lesson.

Understandable and I can see why but rookies will take the advice, maybe not at first but once they relax they will realize you where right.

Spend one hour every 10-hr break practicing backing up, if possible. In a week, you’ll be a pro.

I posted two comments about tips on backing up here:

I find it hilarious when the spotter is yelling angrily at the newbie backing up. I’m thinking to myself, this knucklehead probably sucked at backing when he was a newbie too!

I think it's amusing watching rookies spotting for each other while backing.

But then again, I provided that very same entertainment myself.

Im with you. A few weeks ago I stopped at a popular truck stop and there was a struggling driver trying to back up, my daughter was with me and she asked if I was going to help the guy, so after telling her he would more likely not want help, she prompted me to do something. So I got out of my pickup, stood there next to his truck and got his attention, he rolled down the window, and I asked him if he could use some help.

Omg I thought I was back on a navy ship arguing with those old salts with the language this guy used so I just walked away.

Got back to the pickup, told my girl that people are just too ignorant to welcome help and sat there watching this guy for 20 more minutes until he hit the truck pulling out in front of him.

I won't help anyone any more because of this and a few other times where the people were not so cordial.

@Ridgeline i fully understand and agree to some of your points.

I can never help anyone back up because of legally being responsible for him hitting another driver I just won’t do it. With the sue happy nature of this industry it’s not worth it.

My intention of this thread is to give rookies words of encouragement like @PE_Trans just did with his thread, I personally don’t have issues 99% of the time anymore backing, but some situations still have me “threading the needle” super careful while I see other do it in one take.

Words of encouragement is all it takes. You be a good person let karma catch up to the other guy if he’s an idiot.

“Isn’t it pretty to think so”.
Extra credit if you can name the book where that came from.
