Well I can tell you this. I will believe my "buddies" with 3 and 19 yrs of experience over a rookie with one any day any time. After five years at May I can tell you they are a BAD company to work for. You will sit for 2+ days ever week. They run there rookies to save money and just when you start to make a descent wage and start to stand up for yourself. They cut the miles. Drivers who can think for them self are not welcome there. They want steering wheel holding drones. Like it or not. THIS IS THE TRUTH ABOUT MAY.

Kbar.....Ive seen your posts on other sites. It seems you are just not happy anywhere. Once again you post stuff you cant back up. You quote your "buddies" with massive experience. I will make a deal with you and not tell everyone the real story about your time at May if you just go to another thread and complain about one of your other jobs.

I have no plans of banning anyone...everyone can post their thoughts towards this company....good or bad.

What I won't put up with from anyone is, threats, insults, and inflammatory remarks.

There is no reason why people here can't interact in a respectful and adult manner. Sometime we just have to agree to disagree and move on.

Now, this post is not directed at anyone in particular, this applies to everyone here.

The real truth? Is that supposed to be some kind of threat? Am I to quake in my boots now because some rookie THINKS he knows the real truth? Ok lets do the REAL truth. 5yrs running for them. 3000+ miles every week, 12000+ miles every month. I did such a bag up job that THEY came to me and asked me to be a driver recruiter. That in 2006 THEY came to me and asked me to go to the 2006 Idaho Truck Champion ships. Where I took 3rd place. Something no May driver has done sense then. THEY came to me and asked me to be a trainer. One of there best. THEY came to me time and time again because there rookies could not handle the job and they need yet again another load saved. So yea rookie, Lets talk about the truth. When they set there trucks back to 60mph I told them I would not drive a slow ###, unsafe truck like that. So we parted ways. So the TRUTH IS once again you have no idea what you are talking about. Get on the porch pup.

So "kabar" when May did something they felt that best for the company to slow the trucks down to either save some money due to the price of fuel or for what ever the reason you could not support them After they supported you by asking for your help in those areas you stated? I find that to be a very poor reason to quit.

In reading the posting from you and others I do not see anything to call May a "BAD" company. The equipment in better than most good size sleepers 13 spd trannys from the trailers I have pulled I have not seen anything as of yet to make me question Mays maintance.

To those that maybe thinking about going with May. I have only been here for two months I am not some rookie I came here because something else I was working on fell through. when that happened May was one of the company's that had a yard here in Denver and I would not have to be bused across the USA.

They are what I would call a training company in they will tell you where to fuel which route to go, forced dispatch as well and yes the trucks do 61/62 mph and there are slower trucks out there now days not many though.

My first month I ran 14,000 miles this month sucks only 10,000 I'm not the only one and not the only one from this company I know of with low miles I know a few other drivers and O/O that have slowed way down with some comany's closing their doors.
now for those of you that say "well I'm doing just fine here" good for you but do you really know the inside workings at that company as to where they are?

Something else I see is a lot of people that have been here for a long time that tells me the turn over is low, If May was that "BAD" I do not think you would see to many drivers here past two years.

My personal opinon is that May is OK I feel it comes down to what you can Talerate, May is controling in the way they do things I'm not happy about the way they pick the fuel stops the routing is not a big thing my softwear usually picks the same way. the forced dispatch I can leave it but it's not a big thing. The slow trucks unlike some I understand why they did it. As for it being unsafe maybe, I remember the day's when Swift was a 55mph company and you would know to get over when you saw one ahead of you.

When I have had to call the office for any reason most everyone has been easy to talk with there are two maybe three I would like to send back to Oregon but the rest from Brooks to the people at Payette have been OK.

    Cethern,

I tend to agree in part with your overall perspective, having worked for May, but then you have only two months experience with the company. You could be lucky enough to have a decent truck, but when I was there, my first truck was a long nose pete that broke down repeatedly. My later trucks were OK, but they were stripped down econo models to be sure. I once spent July 4th weekend waiting for the shop to open up and repair my first truck. Right about now you should be getting the most mileage possible since you are beginning to understand the system and haven't yet had a pay raise. When I was there, my driver manager once told me I was her most experienced driver--I was shocked by this comment since I had only 6 months experience at the time! At that time, I drove happily and hard for deliveries across the nation, helping upon occasion to keep a client happy when May company load planners had screwed up. But, I was also troubled by a number of May company personnel practices.

First, I had to constantly complain to payroll--through my driver manager-- for errors with reimbursements that frequently cut my paycheck in half. The poor pitiful driver is asked by big boss to pay for company expenses, and then get reimbursed weeks later. If the driver takes an advance--which thay can do--their paycheck will become a nightmare in complexity, providing further opportunity for abuse by payroll. There's no online payroll here, May has an old fashioned 1960's style payroll system, with a codified pay stub in tiny dox matrix print that is sent in the mail home a week late, and in the case of the OTR driver, impossible to manage in a timely manner. So, because of this, May tends by ineptitude to nickel and dime the driver for things like toll reimbursements, wiper fluid, etc. And, payroll is comprised of teenagers and post-high school young adults with neither care nor commonsense to wonder when they see it on their computer screen--why is this driver getting a $100 paycheck for 3,000 miles worth of driving? Ask any dispatcher and you'll learn that driver's routinely "freak out" because of payroll screw ups. Yeah, right, May isn't a "bad" company like Covenant or CR England, companies that really prey upon drivers, but the ineptitude of their system tends to undermine driver trust in the company over time.

Kabar's report should be considered carefully, as it reflects an obvious lack of long term investment that May has in their employees. After they supported you by asking for your help in those areas you stated?--This statement makes no sense, and reflects the social game May perpetuates in their newly hired and eager drivers. Later, the game turns into one of social testiness just before every payraise. During happy times, the driver is asked to do a favor for free, like delivering boxes of recruiting material, or even a driver, from one office to another. The compensating reward is a smile and a pat on the back. I'm not saying driver's shouldn't do favors for the company because being charitable to the company can be good, but don't confuse this with "support". The driver spends labor doing these things at no real benefit to himself in the long run. Don't think the manager's gesture of friendliness means anything, because it doesn't. If their personnel computer screen adds up the numbers and says you have to go, you will be routed to a terminal and asked to empty out your truck at their convenience (although I'm often amazed at who the company retains by the same token).

And, I don't blame the driver who gets frustrated and quits for having the mph governor lowered to the extent that reduced speed will often mean reduced paycheck size. Now that fuel prices are low, the company is profiting greatly, especially for those coast to coast refer trips, while the driver makes peanuts. So, again, May cuts costs for itself at the expense of the driver, without a compensating increase in mileage pay. Also, I recall that May charges the driver for fuel if idling is above 10%, but provides a bonus for drivers who stay below this amount. I'd collect a few dollars in bonus every check, but I had to sweat it out to do so-- the trucks don't have APUs and May uses cheap reconditioned batteries that won't provide a dependable charge. I recall having to use a headlamp to read as the cab light system would time out within minutes. Meanwhile, old Marvin flies around in a helicopter burning up massive amounts of fuel. Don't get confused into thinking this Oregon based company is going "green", or fuel efficient for the good of society because they aren't.

Thats funny, I don't care who you are.:biggrin_255:

    ,

I agree, I tolerated them for 6 months. But I actually enjoy going to work now, not just tolerating it.

Listen if you want to pull dog food, paper towels and paper rolls or cardboard around in 60-62 mph trucks and sleep naked in your hot cab while you spend the weekend at Yolo, Fontana or Halsey then go for it.

But I will say it again I left May on good terms and got along with the staff their just fine.. But for most drivers who know any better they are a mediocre company with mediocre miles who cut corners on maintenance and facilities because they haul the scraps no one else wants, and have to.
