I agree with you about the subsidies and despise government involvement in any shape or form.
But to be totally fair, without Army Issue desert tan uniforms big oil wouldn't be supplying crap. What's that subsidy add up to per gallon?

 

I grow a little corn but not for ethanol. It goes for feed. I don’t think anyone will say ethanol is the best octane booster but it’s probably the healthiest. And farmers return about 80% or more of what they earn back into the economy
