23 year veteran trucker fired!

All of you knocking @cmbyrom please come back on here at 65 years of age and tell us what you have and that you are retiring comfortably. Most of you haven't got a clue.
She didn't come on here looking for internet experts on bull hauling, proper driving techniques, why your driving style is correct, tailgating and other totally irrelevant topics.

Not trying to put salt in the wound- But if you and Hubby are 70 plus- Relying on an income by means of employment should be the LAST thing on your minds at the Golden years of life.
No IRA? No Pension? No retirement saved up at all?

Social Security SHOULD be enough if you 2 put in enough employable years..(Minimum 30 years)

Don't count on iDIOT motor carriers to keep you afloat- They don't care about you.

Im assuming you have outstanding debt still in your 70's......Which,Im Sorry to Hear- At this point in your lives- You should be enjoying it.

 

If you're not watching your mirrors, you aren't "getting the big picture", and you cannot manage the space all of the way around your truck. For example, if someone is tailgating you, you want to know that so that you can increase your own following distance to give yourself time to slow, which will give the idiot behind you the opportunity NOT to involve you in his wreck. It's called defensive driving. Also, if the unexpected happens ahead of you, if you have been watching your mirrors regularly to know what is going on next to you and behind you, a quick glance in the mirror to confirm what you already know and you can change lanes quickly to avoid what's happening up ahead. If you haven't been paying attention to anything other than what's up ahead, you have no clue where your "outs" are until you've taken the time to study your mirrors to make sure nobody is there in the lane next to you. That is time you may not have. One last point on this, but when you're focused exclusively on one narrow area (such as the road directly ahead), it is more tiresome as it lacks the mental stimulation to keep you engaged. It increases your chances of drifting into a state of highway hypnosis...basically your body on autopilot behind the wheel without conscious effort, and no recollection of the miles you've put behind you.

There is nothing safe about keeping your eyes locked straight ahead.

 

I know you cannot, but when you see something off in your peripheral vision, you then take an actual look at it. And, yes, as I have said before in this thread, I just ignore tailgaters.

 

as mentioned many posts ago, fight that ticket, get it reduced to a lesser charge, just make sure that it is said that he will pay the fine IN FULL, cuz all they really want is the money. call the number on the ticket, you might be able to talk with the DA's office which can cut him a deal, in "SOME" jursidictions, the court clerk can also have the authority to do this, he or you have to call and ask/talk.

as far as other jobs in YOUR area, as mentions, he can try clss B jobs, and there as as many if not more of those in some areas of any state, as there are available class A jobs.

construction (but may also have to be a laborer) trash hauling to and from transfer stations, or city/town routes, appliance store deliveries (may be a lot of heavy lifting however), the state DOT highway dept in your area, check the state employment websites, delivery driver for a bakery to other stores, markets, (try distributors for say wonder sunbeam, nissan breads)

i just retired myself, most likely at or over your husbands age....it can be tough getting hired on at (say) a class A job, but NOT impossible.

please be aware that I KNOW from experience, that AGE DISCIMINATION on people over about 65 IS OUT THERE...don't belive me..??

there ARE other articles on this.......i had experienced this myself, beofre i got the last job, before i retired....

the employers of course DO NOT tell you, that your age is a factor......

but when you take into consideration, health, fitness, longevity on the job, pay, benefits, the younger people win this hands down.

at our age, employers know that we are a set back to them, and thier workman's comp insurance AND health benefits.

your husband can be the picture perfect healthy man that can out run, out work any man 40 years his junior.

but many employers "go with the odds" of hiring younger over older.

i wish the 2 of you well, i really do, but in my long lived opinion on life and experiencing age discrimination myself, he may want to settle for a class B job.
