Got a call from OD today was told about a driver training program, where you start on the dock and then move to a P&D trainee. I would have to sign a contract and stay a year... which wouldn't be bad considering they are a great company. I'm worried about how long I'd have to "work" the dock before I'd start driving... the plus side is I wouldn't have to pay for school the down side is I wanted to Team with my wife who just graduated from CDL school. I was told they wouldn't team new drivers. She could sign on doing P&D for OD
Would this be a good way to get started in the industry? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,.

I’ll second Radman, take it. I here great things about OD. Plus, they’re all over the country so you’d have some prospects if you ever decided to move.

Any idea on how long the dock work could last?

Did you send them a resume / Apply on internet or go there in person ? I heard someone say go in person is better.
I am overseas right now but would like to get on with them in Indianapolis when I move back to Indiana in December.
I have been on this site for a long time and ODFL is probably the best job out there for driving a truck from what I read.
Congrats , and I hope you keep us all posted on your progress.
Husband and wife teaming , I think would lead to some great times and major $$$$$$$$$$$$
Good Luck !FlaSwampRat and Blues Junkie Thank this. -

There may be a short period of time that you will be a dock worker before you start training. They usually try to get a few people onboard together for a class and they want to make sure you can show up for work every day.
