Naps are a great way to get through the transition IMHO.
I have an irregular sleep pattern anyway. So napping for short periods is a way of life for me, and has been since I was in High School.
It was a real ##### when I was in the Navy though.
I can make the switch from daytime to night driving, within 48 hours easily.
Energy drinks just taste bad, and have no other affect on me.
Need help staying awake/falling asleep:

Listening to the music on the radio will make me tired on long runs. No matter if it's the CD or the AM/FM tuner. I went online and purchased AUDIO BOOKS on CD's. Finished the entire TOM Clancy collection in a month! I 'll do the entire route without the radio, you can almost count on what's going to be played next. A 30 minute Power Nap before I head back into L.A. traffic sure helps. No freight is worth my Life. Boss may not like it, but I remind him, it's better than knocking on my door to tell my wife something bad has happened to me.
Falling asleep, close the blinds, cover the windshield and put in some ear plugs. -
It does not matter how many times a movie is watched. You will tend to be distracted by it. -
To stay awake:
1. Sirius Satellite Radio (plenty of stations to choose from)
2. A thermos of coffee or an energy drink
3. Pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds or any other seed you have to open.
4. Talking on the CB radio
To fall asleep:
1. 2 Tylenol PM's end of story.......see you in 8 hours -
Not advisable to take Tylenol PM more than 2 weeks.

Google TylenolPM and then read the most asked questions.
Taking such drugs can lead to liver problems. Insomnia is also a possible problem. You can get addicted to it.
If you have to take such drugs to sleep, there are problems. -
I agree that you should not use it regularly but if you need to get some sleep and cant, it will do the trick. Falling asleep at the wheel will kill you faster than tylenol pm will. -
My "guerilla shift adaptment" program isn't working too well; i can only sleep about 5-6 hrs after i get home. i do, however, catch about 1-2hrs of napping while on the run---we have some waiting time before the trailers get released at the turn point.
So, technically, i am getting about 6-7-8 hours of sleep per 24 period, but i'm still feelling really tired.
i will try the tylenol pm's, but i will probably be changing runs next week so hopefully i won't have to take the pills (thank goodness!).
2) RE: satellite radio---so many channels, yet so little to really listen to. NPR is better, but you can't always get it.
More concerning staying awake later. -
As I've gotten older, I've taken on the recharge effect of catnapping. I can lay down on a lunch break and get a 10 minute nap that makes my afternoon go far better and more energetic. I don't even use an alarm. If I'm really tired though, that 10 minutes can stretch into 1/2 hour.
Disregarding the logbook, you could attempt to learn this trick just for your own safety. I don't know how it came about except that I just started kickin' back and shutting my eyes when I needed to.FriedTater Thanks this.
