Is anybody using load boards for Canada only freight? If so which one? And how much does a subscription cost? I talked to Transform and it's HUNDRED of dollars a month? Guys I talk to south of the bother are paying less than $100 for most of the boards they belong to. Thanks.
Good luck finding a load board for less! We use LoadLink sometimes, and they are decent but it's a total scramble to be the first caller and it's $272.50/month. They have other features that you can use for additional costs, such as financial risk associated with certain brokers, etc.
Many people have regular customers and they don't need a board. Once established in the industry you will probably not need them either. Things are much different here than in the USA. You probably want to get a tandem truck to I'll bet. That step alone will limit you severely as to who will hire you. In the USA many run tandem drive axles still....here the most common thing is tri drives, and heavy front axles. If you want to sell your truck in the future also good luck if its not a tri drive. I frequently hire people to pull my trailers, but only a tri drive with 16000 - 20000 pound front ends in them, heavy frames to. Every year I see the tandems disappearing more and more. So if you're planning to buy a truck and start pulling trailers for people, do your homework first and make sure that you buy the right truck for the work you will get. I exclusively hire tri drive day cabs, they haul more weight, and lower tare weight. Them huge sleepers may look pretty, but they are heavy.
I've been an O/O for years. I have a tandem and was hailing dry van into the US. I just had a hip replacement and won't be going back to the company I was with and probably back to deck work. I thought about buying my own trailer, a tri-axel drop deck and getting my own plates and insurance. Have a month or so of recoup to decide.
While you can't work, make enquiries with people since you have time. And then whatever offers the best money and most work, buy that trailer. I know zero about Nova Scotia, and trucking there...looks beautiful in photos though.
