From Grand Junction, west on 70 to Green River, UT (still on 70) about 3 miles past second GR exit, take US 6 north to Price and Provo, at Provo, you join back up with I-15 and up you go to Butte and I-90 then west to Missoula. (just for info sake--my grandpa was born in Missoula, two centuries ago...now I really feel old...LOL)
Have a nice trip, watch them brakes and speed limits on the downhill after Eisenhower Tunnel, those boys don't like the smell of brakes, and have some reward pieces of paper for speed down them thar hills> The drive is fantastic this time of year through those mountains!
And by the way...Loveland Pass is 11,990 + feet, I have the pictures of every student I had on my truck at the summit sign, 11,990! And if you go over Loveland, you will be on US 6, it circles around back to I70. The view from up there is worth the extra miles to me...but if you don't have the need to take the detour (over height 13-6 limit through Eisenhower Tunnel), stay on 70! You have to leave 70 before the tunnel to go over US6 and Loveland Pass...
I just reread your post..since you are a 4 wheeler, take the US 6 over Loveland, stop and get a picture from the summit, there is plenty of pullout parking room. If you are alone, there is usually others up there to help you with your picture. Watch the downhill on the other side of the summit, it can be very deceiving! Have a safe trip, and give the truckers a wave and some space on your drive!
Need help from someone who knows the roads well.

No 4 wheeler here....no trucker either. Kind of a hobby trucker.......have my own rig and haul my own horses. I have attached a pic of my truck. Trailer I got is a 48' van drop converted to haul the horses. I will be staying on the 4 lane, no 2 lanes for me. Trailer is 13'6".
So am I correct that this is mostly a downhill trip? I will hardly even a load, probably only 2 horses in the trailer so as long as I keep it slow when I start the decline, I should not be harsh on the brakes. I figure if I put the flashers on and stay in the right lane I can just sit back and wacth the speed to make sure I don't get her spinning to fast that I should be alright.
Was looking at that I6 route but was not sure how truck friendly it would be. So from Grand Junction, how long can I expect to be on the road before hitting Missoula? -
US 6 is good road, big rigs on it all the time, great road actually, so...
Grand Junction to Green River....100 miles
Green River to Provo................130
Provo to Missoula....................481
total......................................711..just like the convienience store..LOL
Plenty of places to stop and walk out the horses all along the route mentioned. Just after Price, after climbing through the coal zone, (canyon road, 4 lane) at the top, great place to stop and walk the horses out. Otherwise, after the Eisenhower tunnel, its downhill, with one more climb up to Vail Summit, but you should enjoy the trip> -
Yep US 6 is the way to go. Been on it many times with my Big Rig. Pain in the ##### in the summer with the tourrorist. But then where isn't LOL.
