Okay, I'm gonna show the dumb redneck side of myself by asking this, but I gotta ask it anyway.

    What's a "jailbroke" phone?

To "jailbreak" an iphone is to use a proram to hack into it to be able to allow "non approved" applications run on it. It can also be unlocked so other SIM cards can be used on it. Jailbroke iphones can do multimedia messages, even video and can be used as a 3g wifi hotspot for your laptop. (i.e. wireless tether)

That's a good sign that broadband is getting cheaper when the most popular phone becomes capable of tethering. HardlyWorkingNeverHome, I don't think AT&T goes after the jailbroken phones because it's a hassle to push 5 gig through 3G bandwidth. I personally don't have time to do whole video downloads, so I can't see ever using more than 5 gs. Besides, like all broadband, the system speed is terribly oriented towards downloading commercial crap, rather than uploading personal photo and video files. Whenever I try to upload some images from a travel photo shoot to my Virtualtourist.com website, for example, it takes a while and I often quit. I most often do this work when at home on the hardwired DSL connection. But, I can transfer spreadsheet and text data easily, and download all the YouTube junk I like. The iPhone is oriented toward that sort of thing.

If tethering will be part of the 3s OS, I assume, the 3rd generation phone I bought last Dec will still be relevant for most functions. I notice though that the phone price has tumbled. I paid $299 for my 16gig, and now they will sell for $199-. I think Palm Pre and Blackberry better produced better results at lower prices fast, or they'll be knocked out of the game altogether. I'll probably wait until the next round before I swap hardware...Any first generation users ready to upgrade?

You could always call them and say you are moving to an area where Sprint isn't available or has poor coverage. Take a look at their coverage map and pick a spot. They can't force the ETF (Early Termination Fee) upon you if you can't use the service. :)

I've been a devout BlackBerry user for years now. With it I watch TV shows and movies, listen to music (downloaded or streaming), browse the web, download files, upload files, tether to a laptop (for free) and enjoy push e-mail along with wireless calendar synchronization (also free).

Apple can keep on charging a premium for their shiny entry level PDA/toy. BlackBerry and Palm will continue to dominate the business and power user sectors.

Not everyone needs to carry a Blackberry to feel important. I seriously doubt that many would agree with calling the iPhone a toy. I personnaly know two people who have Blackberries that they carried due to their jobs but carried iPhones for personal use. Both like the iPhone better. I like mine a lot more than any phone I've had.

The only thing wrong with the iPhone is that it is manufactured by Apple.

Check out Sprint's new Palm Pre. It looks pretty sweet.

To me it's not about feeling important. It's about using a device that does everything I need it to without draining my wallet in the process. Besides, the iPhone has too big a footprint for my liking.

While I'm at it... for many people the iPhone *is* just a toy. Also, the iPhone is far more a status symbol than the BlackBerry ever was/will be.

To each their own I suppose.

Ditto on that. I'm really looking forward to the Pre. The interface is liquid smooth and very fast from what I've seen so far. Hopefully they get/have gotten all the patent issues with Apple worked out.
