I’d have an APU if I was driving the truck but since I have drivers in them and I run until the warranty is out and sell them, it doesn’t make sense. As my screen shots showed, I’m getting 7 to 8.5 mpg anyway even with idle.
I’m impressed with the X15.86scotty, FlaSwampRat and Long FLD Thank this. -
Any data to support this? I would be interested in reading it and seeing what the results of oil analysis were between a few engines with various idling amounts.Bean Jr. Thanks this.

So an hour of idle time is the same as pulling a 120k lbs load up a 5% grade? Of course not. So naturally it's not the same as pulling a 30k lbs load on flat ground either. Closer than the first scenario sure, but it's still working the engine harder at higher RPMs, way more wear and tear driving

I just killed my truck last week because I did not have an APU and I had to idle for A/C during my break. Ran in California, Arizona, NV and Utah in 100+ degrees and idle for my break. After 3 days, blown head gasket in the mountains. I wish I should of made time to get to a hotel and shutdown my truck. Now, I am buying a truck with an APU.
FlaSwampRat and Intothesunset Thank this. -
I'm driving a 2020 Cascadia with Park Smart. It has the electric a/c and heat when parked. Then recharge the batteries drive down the road.
FlaSwampRat, Intothesunset and Midwest Trucker Thank this. -
You must run somewhere where it's fairly mild. I've got almost 1600 hours on my generator in the last 6 months. Of course, I work down here near the surface of the sun and I do a lot of sitting. The generator runs whenever the truck stops.
It did get down to 65° one night last week. I hopped out of the truck and it kind of shocked me with the cold. Thought perhaps I'd taken a wrong turn at Albuquerque and ended up in Canada, lol.Tug Toy, 86scotty, D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this. -
I'm doing way better than that in an '09 T660 pulling flatbed!Tug Toy Thanks this. -
2019 KW T680 without APU but with idle management system that runs the bunk heater and AC off of a separate battery pack. Cummins X15 with 12 speed auto trans. Needless to say no need to idle when parked.
My last IFTA report lists my miles per gallon at 8.2 all miles. When I'm dead head I get 10 MPG.
.Midwest Trucker Thanks this. -
Sometimes I wonder if I should get more into aero devices to increase mpg but then I remember that the biggest influence by far is the driver himself. The driver can make a 1.5 mpg difference pretty easily.
whoopNride, KB3MMX, FlaSwampRat and 3 others Thank this.
