There a certain school of thought to stick to more or less the same lanes and not to chase wild goose. I think @rollin coal once said that. I kind of like it and apply it. It makes my life simpler. You get to know towns of shippers/receivers and what money to expect and what brokers are involved there. You also get to know truck stops, motels with parking, cheap fuel (yet good quality) truck stops. Weigh station habits. etc.
Yes, I am getting less per mile, much less than I would like and I have to make it up by running more miles...delivering not straight home but somewhere 200-300 miles beyond and find a short haul of beer to take me home so the revenue agrees and this is sometimes 2 day longer trip. It does not mean I would not be convinced to run to California or Florida if they paid me nicely. I hope that this method will average out to my benefit in the long run ( I mean years).

rollin coal and PE_T Thank this.

I give you @Dave_in_AZ and @Midwest Trucker both credit for being able to buy trucks and hire drivers...

I'd be pulling my hair out.

I guess you definitely have to have trust in people...

From treating your equipment right, to being on time for pickup and delivery, driving professionally, and the list goes on...

All that comes after the strenuous task of finding a quality driver, which seems to be a rarity in this industry nowadays...

LOL Making my head hurt thinking about it!!!

I've seen the same thing. I called on a CH load this morning from Fresno to Phoenix, 585 miles. 440 or so of those through California, Los Angeles, over the grapevine. Picked up at noon and delivered at 6:30am. On a perfect day you're looking at 11 hours of drive time and a 10 hour break in there. I told him the times were pretty much impossible, and he told me he has drivers in the lane who do it all the time no problem. It was Pepsi no less, you'll be sitting there at the shipper. Not sure what these drivers are doing to get there on time, but it isn't legal.

Mega carriers can relay a trailer to avoid the 10 hour break. Drop it in a yard and have a new driver with fresh hours take it in for delivery. But if they put these loads out on general load boards and don't ask or pay enough for team drivers or a trailer relay, they get what they pay for. If it's late it isn't the fault of the person who accepted the load. Brokers who claim that they have drivers who do it all the time with no problem are blowing smoke up your butt.

No they don't. Tons of people run paper logs or AOBRD and make things work
