I didn't know Joy well, but any driver on the road knew her, and she was just as capable and respected of a driver as there is. There are wanna be drivers that have been driving truck for years come up here with a load to Prudhoe, and fly out or hitch hike and pay to have someone drive their own truck out or have it hauled out, it isn't the kind of trucking for week kneed drivers.
And those with comments of what she should have done, does not know what they are talking about.
She was not just known as a good driver, but a good lady too.

I don't know the son, but I will say you had one hell of a mom.

 

I never understood the mentallity of that. It doesnt take muscle to drive, or fly airplanes. Yes men tend to have more body strength. Yet that should never be used to say a woman cant do a job one way or another.

Thanks for the kind words. I've kept my cool and ignored the bad comments but lost it last night. Getting close to a year from her accident and it's getting to me. Everyone that met her had only great things to say about my mom. I was really lucky to have her.

 

I would say you were, we all think about her and that #### road every time we drive by.

 

The story said she left the road and then rolled it on the soft shoulder. Nothing said about a soft spot in the road itself. Sounds like she was either distracted or fell asleep. Another good driver died doing what she loved to do.

 

The story also mentioned fog. Maybe road and shoulder wasn't too well defined at that point. We don't know. We weren't there.

 

There is no shoulder, there period, it drops 7 to10 feet. One of them deals the state decided we needed to be guaranteed to be on the top instead of the side, anytime you get a wheel off. It is also dirt/gravel, frozen in winter, soft is relevent,it is all soft right on the edge.
Guys it is a different type of driving than what you are used to, we sometimes are forced to drive by feel, as more or less zero visability, up until 3 years or so ago, if you got a wheel off in that section, you could back up and get her back on the road, in those conditions you are not going fast enough to get the whole truck off.
When they decided to elevate the road, that has all changed, I would bet big bucks she was barely moving under 15 or so mph when this happened. I know one guy it happened and he got completely stopped before it went over.
Like I said, ib is all different from what most drivers are used to or will even think about doing if they were capable of it at all, many aren't, but it is great trucking if you like it and have the guts for it.
